The Tribunals Officer manages and administers the organization's hearing process pursuant to the Chartered Professional Accountants Act (the Act). This position works with various stakeholders to ensure CPA Alberta's obligations under the Act and other governing documents related to the conduct of Discipline/Appeal hearings are fulfilled in a compliant, consistent, transparent, and fair manner. This role reports to the Associate General Counsel and Director, Tribunals Office.



CPA Alberta has offices in Edmonton and Calgary and provides hybrid Telecommuting opportunities (working from home a maximum of 3 days a week).

What you bring




A related university degree with 5 to 7 years of progressively responsible experience in a regulatory or adjudicative environment. Knowledge of natural justice, procedural fairness and the adjudicative tribunal system. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain tribunal rules, practices and procedures. Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills with a diverse range of stakeholders. Effective organization and planning skills with a high attention to detail. Proficiency with MS Office Word, Excel, Sharepoint, Outlook, and Zoom. High degree of professional ethics and integrity. Certificate in Tribunal Administrative Justice, or similar training, would be an asset. Adjudicative experience or experience in adjudicative processes would be an asset.

What you will be doing




Oversee coordination of the Tribunal process; schedule hearing dates, prepare and maintain files and documentation, and attend and facilitate hearings to ensure appropriate procedures are followed and to provide support to participants. Assist in the selection of appropriate CPA Alberta and public tribunal members from volunteer rosters, contact those selected, conduct conflict checks, and confirm participation in the scheduled hearings. Coordinate review of decisions by Counsel to the Tribunal and circulate decisions for signature within the prescribed time periods. Monitor compliance with all sanctions and orders resulting from discipline. Ensure findings and orders of the Tribunal are published as directed by the decision and by Legislation and advise appropriate CPA Alberta staff of suspensions or expulsions. Oversee the collection process of costs and fines brought about by the hearing process. Manage the administration of the appeal process ensuring that it meets the requirements of the Act. Respond to requests for information and provide relevant documentation to the Court of Appeal and Ombudsman. Maintain records of all decisions and sanctions agreements and retain documentation from the hearing process. Attend to all items requiring publication and documentation for registrant's file as required. To the extent permissible under the Act, collaborate with others in the Conduct & Discipline team to use workflow analytics, benchmarking, and data monitoring to optimize the use of resources and find efficiencies in CPA Alberta's Conduct & Discipline processes

Working Specifications




Fast paced work environment. Some travel will be required. Occasional work outside of regular working hours may be required. This position can be in either Calgary or Edmonton.
