The City of Edmonton's Integrated Infrastructure Services (IIS) team is looking for a Pavement Evaluation Technician to help manage the future of our city's roads.
The City of Edmonton maintains transportation infrastructure valued at over $11.1 billion. In this role, you will be a key member of the Lifecycle Management Section, focusing on ensuring our roads are safe and reliable for the public. You will conduct vital condition assessments on roadway assets, operating specialized testing equipment like the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) and mobile GIS applications. Your work will also involve guiding seasonal field staff, ensuring high-quality data collection through training and quality control. The data you collect and analyze is essential for prioritizing capital rehabilitation projects, helping the City maximize asset lifespan and minimize long-term costs.
What will you do?

  • Plan and execute the collection of roadway condition data using specialized equipment, including the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) and hand-held mobile devices with GIS applications
  • Use GIS/ETL tools and office software (Google Workspace/MS Office) to post-process, analyze, and report on collected data to create condition ratings
  • Provide guidance, direction, and training to seasonal field staff on assessment activities, post-processing tasks, and safety protocols
  • Conduct timely quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) checks to ensure all collected data adheres to asset assessment protocols
  • Perform daily and seasonal calibrations, minor maintenance, and troubleshooting for structural testing equipment and mobile devices
  • Assist in updating pavement and asset management systems with new data, including work history and asset attributes, using GIS and specialized software
  • Support the prioritization of roadway renewal projects and generate progress reports
  • Respond to inquiries from internal teams and community partners regarding condition assessments and prioritization
Qualifications
  • Completion of a two-year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or an equivalent qualification
  • A minimum of two (2) years of proven experience in the field assessment of roadway assets
  • Candidates must have or be eligible for a CET certification through ASET
Skills required for success
  • Sound knowledge of technical principles and practices related to roadway condition assessment techniques and QA/QC processes/procedures, and asset management
  • Competent operational knowledge of both manual and automated condition assessment equipment for roadway assets
  • Proficiency in GIS, with expertise in Esri ArcGIS and/or Hexagon GeoMedia
  • Self-motivated with analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as effective communication and presentation skills (both verbal and written)
  • Proven ability to interpret technical information and demonstrate strong report-writing skills
  • Ability to handle interactions with the public, vendors/suppliers and consultants

Conditions of Employment
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Work Environment
  • This position ?may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement ?with ?the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52. ?
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
