Transportation Planner Senior Consultant

Vancouver, BC, Canada

Job Description

Steer is one of the world's leading independent consultancy firms working in the fields of multi-modal transportation and mobility. We have a well-earned reputation for providing an independent perspective on a wide range of transportation issues and delivering thoughtful, innovative and effective programming of the highest quality.

Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic transportation planner and/or engineer who is passionate about improving streets and places in cities.

Our work is varied, but a common theme is developing solutions that enable sustainable, healthy and safe movement whilst also recognising the role of streets as places. This work is typically undertaken for public sector clients in both Metro Vancouver and across North America, such TransLink and local municipalities.

We have a track record of tackling projects in high-profile locations with complex challenges, such as Yonge Street in Toronto, Gastown in Vancouver and Government Street in Victoria.

Depending on your experience, you will take a project management role in project teams comprised of both junior and more senior experts. You will work closely with our market-leading Associates and Directors across our North American offices, who will actively support you in project delivery and in your wider career development.

Your Skills and Experience

Our projects draw on diverse skills that include transportation planning, street design, transportation data analysis and public engagement. While you may not necessarily have had extensive hands-on experience in all of these fields, you will be comfortable in drawing together the right mix of skills for each project. As such, it is likely that your background includes a balance of quantitative and qualitative experience:

  • An excellent understanding of the transportation challenges and opportunities facing North American cities (such as climate change, equity, health, road safety and air quality), and the implications these have for the planning and design of urban streets.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate feasible options and policies for streets that address the challenges and opportunities above, by considering the needs of all modes and users.
  • Familiarity with relevant street and active transportation planning and design guidance, including an interest in guidance and best practices from elsewhere.
  • Experience using data sources that are relevant to transportation planning, and analyzing them to obtain pertinent insights using tools such as Excel and GIS.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Project Manager, with the ability to lead and deliver transportation planning projects. This would desirably include experience in working with allied professionals, such as urban designers, landscape architects and civil engineers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to distill complex ideas into compelling narratives that are suitable for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in working with a range of clients and stakeholders, including the ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Track record of leading or making contributions towards successful responses to public sector RFPs.
Requirements * Degree in planning, engineering or a related field, ideally with a transportation focus
  • 3+ years of relevant professional experience, ideally including 2+ years experience working in Metro Vancouver
  • Professional Engineer and/or Registered Professional Planner designation, or working towards one of these designations
Benefits

Our social and cultural responsibilities form an important part of our culture and values. We believe that actions speak louder than words, and therefore have annual measurable targets across all social impact areas, particularly DEI and sustainability. We have also committed to successfully operate as a Net Zero Carbon company by 2025.

We offer a competitive package of benefits including private medical, dental, and vision insurance, commuter benefits, group Share Incentive Plan, 22 vacation days, and a discretionary bonus.

Steer is an equal opportunities employer and encourages applications regardless of age, race, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy/maternity or gender.

We understand that some may be dissuaded to apply based of their compatibility with the job description. That being said, we understand that not everyone is a perfect match on paper and encourage anyone to apply regardless of how much their work experience directly relates to the JD.

Part-time and flexible working applications will be considered.
