Hatch, a full-service consultancy, is currently seeking a highly motivated Transportation Environmental Planner to join the Infrastructure group in dynamic our Highway & Bridges team in the Thunder Bay, ON location.

The successful applicant will support the highways and bridges team in a diverse range of environmental and social management matters including environmental assessments, baseline studies, permitting and approval applications, undertaking of audits and development of environmental management systems, predominantly within the infrastructure sector.

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Support the Highways and Bridges Team in leading and completion of environmental components of their work.
  • Contribute to or manage baseline environmental studies, environmental assessments, environmental management strategies, and plans including research, report writing, and stakeholder and regulatory consultation.
  • Develop scopes and budgets related to environmental services.
  • Collect and synthesize scientific literature, existing data sets and secondary source material for technical reports.
  • Identify potential environmental impacts as a result of land use changes and recommend suitable mitigation strategies to avoid and / or reduce potential impacts.
  • Lead and support permitting, and approvals related to the natural environment (e.g., Environmental Protection Act, Fisheries Act, Impact Assessment Act, Species at Risk Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act, Endangered Species Act).
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging regulatory requirements, wildlife and vegetation assessment methodologies, and best practices.
  • Coordinate work with other environmental specialists (i.e. noise, air, archaeology, built heritage, fisheries, terrestrial ecologists, climate change, etc.).
  • Lead project discussions regarding environmental concerns and issues.
  • Work with multifaceted teams to deliver high-quality environmental services to agreed budgets and deadlines.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • A Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in Biology, Environmental Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or equivalent in related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in environmental assessments and the application of policies, protocols and environmental legislation.
  • Experience in MTO Class EA process would be an asset.
  • Environmental and social impact assessment process experience.
  • Knowledge of environmental and social due diligence an asset.
