Position Overview

The Engineering, Parks & Environment Department requires a temporary full-time Trades 2 - Mechanic - Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport for approximately one (1) year.
Responsibilities
You will perform skilled shop and field mechanical work at the journeyman trade level in maintaining, overhauling and repairing a variety of automotive, heavy duty, small equipment and vehicles.
You will perform mechanical overhaul, repair, servicing and maintenance tasks, such as rebuilding and replacing transmissions; installing and repairing motors, rear and front-end assemblies, steering, hydraulic, electrical and brake systems, and, other related advanced mechanical tasks. You will perform gas and electrical welding tasks common to mechanical shop work. The successful applicant will be able to operate vehicles and equipment into position for repair and overhaul. They may also supervisor one or more apprentices engaged in less skilled mechanical tasks as required.
Requirements
The successful applicant will have a mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform heavy duty and automotive mechanical maintenance, servicing and repair tasks. A valid BC Class 5 Driver's License is required and must be upgraded to Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement during the probationary period. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed their Commercial Inspector License, have related technical courses and have experience operating forklifts. Other applicable trades and/or experience with small equipment would be an asset.
The successful applicant will be required to supply their own hand tools for the position.
Compensation
$46.06 per hour + $4 premium pay
(January 2024 rates)
Hours of Work
The successful applicant will work ten (10) consecutive hours, exclusive of a one half hour unpaid lunch break, between the hours of 6:00am and 10:00pm. The shifts will be scheduled Monday through Friday. Current working hours are 6:00 am to 4:30 pm.
