Overview
------------
This is carpentry work at the journeyman level in the construction, maintenance and repair of municipal buildings, structures, services and facilities. When called upon, this position would also be utilized in cabinet making and millwork duties. The incumbent exercises considerable independent judgement and action in completing most assignments and supervise the work of one or more helpers as required. Oral and written assignments, accompanied by blueprints and sketches, are received from a superior who reviews work performance.
Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Concrete formwork/foundations, retaining walls and playground structures.
Complete daily timesheets and maintain work records.
Prepare sites by reviewing blueprints to estimate equipment and materials needed and determine best methods while minimising traffic or public disruptions.
Street light conduit and concrete base installations.
Framing of wooden structures/buildings.
General lock and key work
Millwork and cabinet making
Steel stud framing, T-bar ceilings and drywall installations.
Demountable partitions.
Coordinate projects with subcontractors to ensure safe work procedures and public safety.
Mentor and orientate staff as required.
Design and create digital drawings
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry and or cabinet making trade and in field operations.
Skilled in the use and care of power and hand tools, materials and equipment used in the carpentry/cabinet making trade.
Knowledge and the ability to perform general duties involving lockwork/door hardware
Ability to perform a variety of skilled carpentry and or cabinet making construction and maintenance tasks and work with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions and or requirements related to the work performed.
Working knowledge of the BC Building Code and how it relates to the work performed.
Ability to exercise sound independent judgment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City staff, contractors and members of the public.
Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints and sketches.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work from blueprints, diagrams and sketches.
Ability to effectively communicate with Manager, Supervisor, subordinates, or other key stakeholders
Ability to supervise the work of one or more individuals as required.
Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.
Qualifications and Experience:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by technical courses related to the work, plus a completed recognized apprenticeship in the trade and five (5) years sound related journeyman experience (including apprenticeship training) with considerable experience in the areas of cabinet making and or carpentry preferably in a municipal environment
OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licences, Certificates & Registrations:

Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
Red Seal Endorsement in the Carpentry Trade.

Duties are performed in a shop and or field environment that will expose workers to weather, traffic, and other construction related hazards.
This job is physical in nature, requiring routine light and heavy physical effort and manual dexterity.
Extended periods of concentration and visual effort are required.
