Prairie Rail Solutions is seeking a safety-focused and versatile
Trackmobile Operator / Yard Maintenance Labourer
to support railcar switching, yard operations, and light rail maintenance activities across PRS-operated sites. This role is well-suited to individuals who enjoy working outdoors, operating equipment, and contributing to safe and efficient rail operations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for operating Trackmobile units for non-main track railcar switching, assisting with ground switching activities, and performing general yard and light rail maintenance duties as required. A strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and operational reliability is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Operate Trackmobile units safely and efficiently in accordance with company procedures, CROR Non-Main Track rules, and customer site requirements.
Perform railcar switching activities, including coupling and uncoupling cars, lining switches, applying and releasing hand brakes, and connecting air hoses.
Conduct job briefings and ensure protection of train, track, and equipment prior to and during operations.
Conduct daily inspections of Trackmobile equipment and report any mechanical, safety, or operational concerns.
Perform light rail maintenance activities, including:
Lubricating switch points, switch rods, and related components
Cleaning and clearing snow, ice, debris, and foreign material from switches, frogs, guard rails, and flangeways
Assisting with seasonal switch maintenance to ensure reliable operation in winter conditions
Assist with general yard maintenance such as snow removal, debris cleanup, vegetation control, and site housekeeping.
Maintain clean, safe, and orderly work areas, including equipment, vehicles, and yard facilities.
Accurately complete required documentation, inspection records, and switching logs.
Communicate clearly with supervisors, crew members, and customers to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Promptly report unsafe conditions, track defects, equipment issues, or incidents.
Participate in safety meetings, training, and company initiatives as required.
Promote a professional image of Prairie Rail Solutions at all customer sites.
Qualifications
Ability to safely operate a Trackmobile or willingness to be trained and certified.
Basic understanding of rail switching practices and non-main track operations is an asset.
Familiarity with light rail maintenance tasks such as switch lubrication and flangeway cleaning is an asset.
Strong commitment to workplace safety and compliance with rules and procedures.
Physically fit and capable of climbing on and off rail equipment, lifting and handling air hoses, operating switches, and performing manual labour.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, rain, and snow.
Willingness to work variable shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as operationally required.
Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a small team.
Willingness to obtain and maintain required safety-critical medical clearances.
Ability to pass pre-employment, post-incident, and reasonable-cause drug and alcohol testing.
Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Education & Experience
Grade 12 or GED required.
Previous experience in rail operations, industrial environments, construction, or equipment operation is an asset.
Previous Trackmobile, locomotive, or switching experience is an asset.
Valid Class 5 driver's licence is an asset.
Working Conditions
Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
Exposure to noise, vibration, heavy equipment, and moving rail equipment.
Physically demanding work including walking on uneven ballast, bending, lifting, and climbing.
Shift work based on customer and operational requirements.

Pay: $28.50-$35.00 per hour
