Job Summary

The Permanent Machine Operator is responsible for operating and servicing all work equipment machines for which qualification is held, on the assigned territory. The incumbent performs other duties, as may be required, notwithstanding that such duties may be normally performed by Track Employees, such as inspecting, repairing, and replacing rails, ties, switches, and ballast.

Major Responsibilities

\xc2\xb7 Operate on- and off-track heavy equipment to support track repair and maintenance activities such as:

\xc2\xb7 Remove and replace defective ties, rails spikes, and anchors

\xc2\xb7 Correct deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge

\xc2\xb7 Install and repair street and railroad crossings

\xc2\xb7 Distribute track material

\xc2\xb7 Clear brush, vegetation, snow, and litter from railroad right-of-way

\xc2\xb7 Establish and maintain drainage

\xc2\xb7 Inspect and maintain heavy equipment

\xc2\xb7 Perform other duties as may be assigned when work does not require machine operation, including track inspection and other track maintenance duties

\xc2\xb7 Comply with track safety standards, operating rules, and safe work procedures

Working Conditions

\xc2\xb7 Must be available to work shift work and occasional overtime

\xc2\xb7 The role may be required to work outside the assigned headquarters location from time to time

\xc2\xb7 Ability to perform physical work outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions

\xc2\xb7 Must be able to perform repetitive physical activities during the course of a shift

\xc2\xb7 Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (22 kg) and up to 70 pounds (32 kg) occasionally

\xc2\xb7 Must be able to supply basic personal tools for equipment maintenance

\xc2\xb7 The incumbent is headquartered out of (name of locations) and starts work at this location

\xc2\xb7 The role may be required to report to another location occasionally or work away from home

\xc2\xb7 When required to work away from headquarters, the incumbent is compensated for travel and other expense according to the collective agreement

\xc2\xb7 Must have good eye-hand coordination and grasping ability

Employment Requirements

\xc2\xb7 High School diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)

\xc2\xb7 Valid Driver\'s License

\xc2\xb7 Collaborates with others and shares information

\xc2\xb7 Demonstrates active listening

\xc2\xb7 Relevant work experience in similar working conditions*

\xc2\xb7 Postsecondary trade education*

\xc2\xb7 Experience in or training in mechanical*

\xc2\xb7 Knowledge of signals or Rail Operating Rules*

*Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset

Training

Upon hiring, the incumbent attends formal and on-the-job training. The position is required to complete the training program successfully in order to work as a Permanent Machine Operator.

This position is a unionized position. As such, pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.
