Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Track Design Lead to join the Transit Business Unit in our Linear Infrastructure, Facilities & Station team in the Mississauga, ON location.

Reporting to the Design Manager, as Track Design Lead, you will support a multidisciplinary team of engineers and architects to ensure the delivery of a high-quality design for our clients while adhering to technical requirements, schedule and commercial objectives. Our projects involve corridor widenings, track geometry optimization, special track of work, guideways, rail bridges, enabling works, at-grade and underground stations, maintenance facilities, and intermodal transfer centres.

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Provide design support to the development and selection of concept designs and provide pricing during proposals. Establish track discipline tasks, activities and be responsible for the delivery of multiple projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Prepare/ oversee and coordinate the work of intermediate designers and engineers and perform design review of trackwork alignment, trackwork and grading design to ensure adherence to design requirements and regulations with consideration to construction interface and maintenance throughout project lifecycle;
  • Determining existing conditions, reviewing survey data, existing drawings, and obtaining additional data for the preparation of track engineering drawings.
  • Manage track engineering staff to provide specialized track design and verification;
  • Lead the detailed design of track delivered under various procurement models including Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, Construction Manager At Risk, Progressive Design-Build, and Alliance/Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and prepare inputs to technical specifications/contract documentation;
  • Oversee and prepare technical analysis, designs and reports related to the resolution of technical issues and design options. Navigate uncertainty related to compliance and application of codes and standards;
  • Provide trackwork inputs to construction cost estimates;
  • Coordinate with other design disciplines and sub-consultants;
  • Administer budget management and value engineering as required;
  • Report progress and status of track related activities to the Project and Design Manager;
  • Ensure, audit and enforce design quality and governance policies and promote best-practices of all activities performed by track disciplines and sub-disciplines;
  • Create discipline specific document templates and workflows for all deliverables of the track sub-disciplines.
  • Present design to stakeholders and clients and reply to formal requests for information and clarifications from regulators, etc.;
  • Liaise with team members, clients, agencies and other stakeholders. Participate in community and stakeholder engagement meetings and presentations for track design technical matters.
  • Review shop drawings and conduct field inspections of engineering designs, witness and/or coordinate tests and inspections of trackwork components and systems; and
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Degree in Engineering;
  • P.Eng designation in Ontario;
  • Minimum 15 years of track design lead experience on major infrastructure projects spanning feasibility/concept through detailed design to IFC for commuter and heavy rail infrastructure, including but not limited to corridor alignment, stations, storage tracks and facilities;
  • Expert knowledge of trackwork design requirements including environmental design, mitigation measures, engineering surveys, geotechnical investigation, etc. and design integration.
  • Experience with various contract delivery models including Contractor-led collaborative delivery models (Alliance/ IPD, Progressive Design-Build, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience with various software packages (Microsoft office, AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
  • Knowledge of Metrolinx (GO Track Standards), CN, CP, AREMA and TTC design requirements;
  • Excellent analytical skills to support detailed design projects with the ability to handle complex problem-solving tasks, proposing alternative solutions and solving design challenges.
  • Strong technical writing skills along with a good command of English language in both written and verbal capacities. Ability to confidently present and defend recommendations and initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents, drawings and specifications including design and construction schedules using MS Project and Primavera P6;
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities in decision making and mentorship. Demonstrate behaviours that support diversity, inclusion and a respectful work environment;
