Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Toronto Art Restoration Inc. (TARI) is seeking an art conservator to work in our fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment. Reporting to the Team Manager, the conservator will plan, execute, and document conservation treatments, assessments, and maintenance for historical and modern works of art. Working on a project-to-project basis, the conservator will undertake studio treatment in their area of expertise and comfortability level. The conservator may also be assisting other conservators on artworks outside their specialization. 


RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform conservation treatments on artworks and larger collections using scientific knowledge, technical procedures, artistic/historical sensibility, manual skills, and professional judgement.

Perform conservation assessments on individual artworks and larger collections, including research into artists, materials, and risk factors. Recommend conservation and treatment services based on assessments and cost/benefit analysis. 

Participate in collections management recommendations, collections maintenance, collection surveys, and disaster remediation and advice. 

Generate and maintain permanent conservation records including condition reports, treatment reports, photographic images, and technical data on materials used.

Maintain a clean and orderly workspace, and contribute regularly to general cleaning and organizational duties at TARI’s studio.


KEY QUALIFICATIONS

A Master’s degree from an accredited conservation program with a specialty in paintings or objects, or the relevant combination of education and experience. 

Minimum 4 months of experience (includes internships) in a private practice studio.

A wide range of strong hand skills, including inpainting skills, and the ability to perform tasks with accuracy both in an indoor and outdoor setting. 

Considerable experience with the treatments of historical and modern works of art made up of a variety of materials. Experience in public artworks, monuments, and murals is considered an asset.

Considerable experience with conducting research, writing reports, and analyzing artworks. Excellent documentation and assessment skills are required.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Due to the public nature of conservation projects, all TARI employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Employees must also be able to provide a clear criminal record if asked.
