designing, developing, and improving tooling, fixtures, and mechanical components
specifically for the
hand tool industry
. This role requires
strong mechanical design expertise
, hands-on experience in
tool mechanism development
, and a proven ability to work with cross-functional teams to ensure optimized production operations and world-class product performance.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Design & Development:
Conceptualize, design, and develop
hand tool mechanisms
(ratchet tools, gear assemblies, quick-release systems, etc.) and supporting fixtures for production.
Ensure designs meet performance, durability, and manufacturability requirements.
Technical Documentation & Drafting:
Prepare detailed
CAD models and technical drawings
using SolidWorks or Creo.
Develop schematics, BOMs, and engineering documentation for new components and tooling systems.
Process Optimization:
Conduct
tolerance analysis
and system design studies to improve tool life, performance, and user ergonomics.
Collaborate with production to reduce downtime, optimize assembly, and improve cost efficiency.
Prototype & Testing:
Work closely with machine shops and CNC teams to fabricate precision tooling components.
Conduct prototype validation, functional testing, and iterate designs based on feedback.
Use MATLAB and LabVIEW for data acquisition, test analysis, and performance simulation where required.
Automation & Controls:
Implement automation solutions using
programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
to streamline tool testing and manufacturing processes.
Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement:
Analyze field and production issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives in hand tool design and manufacturing processes.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Mandatory Experience:
Minimum 3-5 years of experience
in
design and development of hand tools or precision mechanical components
.
Proven experience in mechanism design (ratchets, gears, clutches, or similar).
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in
SolidWorks
or
Creo
for CAD modeling and assemblies.
Strong understanding of
mechanical engineering principles
, material selection, and manufacturing processes.
Familiarity with
CNC machining
, tolerance stack-up analysis, and GD&T.
Knowledge of
PLC-based automation
for tooling and fixture applications.
MATLAB/LabVIEW experience for data analysis and test validation is an asset.
Soft Skills:
Excellent problem-solving and root-cause analysis abilities.
Strong communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.
