PWO Canada is a Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier for auto manufacturers globally. We are one of five subsidiaries in the PWO AG Group, manufacturing lightweight metal components for the automotive industry.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The purpose of the position is to repair and maintain tools and dies in order to achieve quality and productivity requirements.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION
The position takes direction from Team Leads and provides direction to apprentice machinists and apprentice toolmakers. The position may also provide direction to junior Tool and Die Makers and new employees who are not as familiar with PWO tools/dies and to press operators.
The position repairs tools based on specifications provided on blueprints and other information such as run records and last off samples. The Tool and Die Maker must consistently evaluate, based on experience, whether the blueprint has provided the best way to meet customer needs. The position works independently but will question the engineering department and the toolroom Team Lead or Supervisor concerning tooling designs. The positions will also interact with the machining group Team Lead to enquire about the progress of components for the tool. The position will ask his/her Team Lead and Supervisor for guidance concerning the purchase of raw materials or equipment. Internal contacts include press operators, production and tooling Team Leads, and quality auditors. Interfaces with General Maintenance staff in regards to sensor applications and installations. Engineering is contacted in order to get prints changed or updated. There are no external contacts.
The position is responsible for his/her work but does not supervise others directly. Work completed by the position impacts the department in the short-term.
This position also requires shift rotation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School Diploma. Certified Tool and Die Maker required.
Knowledge and Skills:
The Tool and Die Maker must have good knowledge of, and be able to use, standard toolroom equipment. These include: drill presses, milling machines, grinders, lathes, overhead cranes, band saws, micrometers, verniers, height gauges. The incumbent must be able to read blueprints and schematics. The position should have some knowledge of the building and repair of progressive and transfer stamping dies. The position may have to use welding techniques to repair tool steel components. The position must be able to lift at least 50lbs.
Communication Skills:
The incumbent must have good oral and written communication skills for normal business communication.
Nature and Length of Experience:
At least two years of experience beyond certification in a similar industry.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Repairs dies and tools by determining the needs and methods, and implements as required.
May be required to build and develop new dies/tools and implement product changes based on specifications provided by engineering. The position reviews die blueprints to check for functionality prior to assembly. Assembles tools, analyzing the design prior to inserting die in tryout press. Checks tool accuracy and production capabilities in the tryout press and troubleshoot problems to ensure a smooth transition to production.
Directs less responsible toolmakers and apprentices. Checks the work of others to ensure the quality of their work. Directs the work of press operators when a tool is ready for production in order to learn about and trouble shoots any problems.
Follows and performs to the instructions as outlined in the Work Area Reference Manual (s) applicable to the department.
Follows and performs to the processes and instructions as outlined in the Process House applicable to the department.
Compliance to all company HR policies and procedures.
Responsible for working safely, complying with safety policies and procedures, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) required in the designated areas as per company policy.
Responsible for working safely and keeping a safe work area for themselves and fellow employees. Reporting any unsafe working conditions, practices, and work-related injuries immediately to his/her Supervisor or Manager.
Any other job-related duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Team Lead, Supervisor and Manager.
