Expression of interest and applications are invited for a full-time position for Associate Dean of the Faculty of Nursing. This is a three-year position, with eligibility for consideration of an additional three-year term, subject to satisfactory performance and review by the Dean and a Review Committee after two years. This is an internal search open only to full-time Faculty of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Prince Edward Island. This appointment is subject to final budgetary approval.

General Description:

Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean - Program Development and Student Experience provides leadership in program planning, development, implementation, and evaluation in the Faculty of Nursing.

The Associate Dean promotes and supports activities related to student progress and student experience. The Associate Dean will play a key role in supporting the strategic priorities of the faculty, including, increasing student success, promoting excellence in student and faculty development, enhancing equity, diversity, and inclusion and lead the development of a cohesive curriculum that meets or exceeds jurisdictional and national standards.

The Associate Dean assumes the role of Acting Dean in the Dean\'s absence and may also be responsible for representing the Faculty of Nursing provincially, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The Associate Dean of Nursing will:

  • Demonstrate and lead with passion, energy, and commitment to nursing education
  • Ensure that academic standards of excellence in teaching, practice and research are maintained in the Faculty of Nursing and reflect a person-centered philosophy
  • Coordinate and facilitate the development of innovative programs and program expansion
  • Actively participate in the creation of formal program reports as required by the university, College of Registered Nurses of PEI, and accrediting bodies
  • In collaboration with the Dean, and Coordinator of Program Operations and Strategic Planning, facilitate strategic planning and priority setting within the Faculty of Nursing
  • Ensure adherence to the academic policies established by the Faculty of Nursing and UPEI
  • Support the growth of research and scholarship within the Faculty of Nursing
  • Actively participate strategic recruitment, marketing, and promotional efforts for the undergraduate 4-year BScN and 23 month accelerated BScN programs
  • Mentor and support the professional development of clinical nursing instructors
  • Work collaboratively with Clinical Course Coordinators, the Undergraduate program coordinator, Clinical and International Coordinator, Learning Resource Centre Coordinator and Simulation Coordinator to promote a cohesive undergraduate curriculum
The Associate Dean will be responsible for activities related to the Bachelor of Science Nursing (BScN) program including:
  • Oversee the BScN program (4 year and accelerated) planning, development, and implementation and play a significant role in curriculum development
  • Collaborate with the undergraduate program coordinator (UPC), clinical course coordinators (CCC), and respective committees (as required) regarding student academic progress for all BScN students (4 year and accelerated program)
  • Consult with the UPC, CCC, clinical and international coordinator (CIC), and the clinical placement coordinator (CPC) to plan clinical placements of the BScN students and ensure that student affiliation agreements, certificates of insurance, and other legal requirements (e.g., licenses) with agencies are in place
  • Support the development of standard operating procedures to guide program administration and reduce risk associated with delivering programing
  • Initiate and participate in risk assessment for all aspects of program delivery associated with the Faculty of Nursing including faculty and staff
  • Collaborate with the UPC, CIC, CPC, and CCC to identify BScN program challenges and risk associated with clinical placements/experiences and collaborate to find solutions to reduce the impact of those challenges on student experience
  • Consult with UPC, CCC, CIC, and CPC and the Learning Resource Centre Coordinator (LRCC) to identify and anticipate human resource needs to support the BScN programs
  • Develop an equitable workload assignment for all clinical nursing instructors (clinical and learning resource center) that complements knowledge and skills of the clinical nursing instructor and support the students\' clinical experience and learning
  • Facilitate orientation and support for all Clinical Nursing Instructors teaching in the BScN program
  • Collaborate with administrative support staff to oversee the maintenance and management of record systems and computerized tracking of all BScN students
  • Assist the Dean and Coordinator of Program Operations and Strategic Planning with documentation as required, for accreditation and other reports
  • Oversee the activities of the Learning Resources Centre (LRC), in consultation with the Undergraduate program coordinator the LRC Coordinator, including the hiring of LRC staff and collaborate with LRC staff to ensure equitable distribution of workload assignments
  • Collaborate with the Dean and liaise with other coordinators and academic units to develop and implement inter-professional educational opportunities for BScN students
  • Collaborate with the Undergraduate program coordinator, Course Coordinators, Clinical and International Coordinator(s), Learning Resource Centre Coordinator, Simulation Coordinator, and others to ensure BScN program reflects a cohesive curriculum that is attentive to current and future trends in Canadian nursing
  • Contribute to policy development and long-term strategic planning for the Faculty of Nursing
  • Recommend and facilitate methods to improve the quality of undergraduate student experience in the Faculty of Nursing
  • In absence of Dean, has signing authority specific to staffing approvals and budgetary matters
Qualifications:
  • A completed doctoral degree in Nursing or related field preferred with at least one graduate degree in nursing
  • Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of PEI (CRNMPEI)
Term: Initial appointment three (3) years with an optional one term renewal.
