PRIMARY FUNCTION:
As a member of the Clinical Support Team at KidsInclusive, the Therapy Assistant - Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) provides clinical support under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist. The Therapy Assistant - CDA assists in the provision of direct client care through implementation of therapy programs; assists in indirect client care; assists in providing departmental support; documents his/her involvement in client care; maintains communication with all other staff members; supports departmental efforts in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities; participates in education orientation and public relations, as required; maintains a safe work environment; performs other related duties as assigned. KidsInclusive frequently provides interdisciplinary programs and the CDA will assist other disciplines within the Centre as requested.
Each employee must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for supporting and providing client and family-centered care. Employees will demonstrate dignity and respect by being courteous and introducing themselves by name, occupation and role. Wherever possible, the Therapy Assistant - CDA will ensure that clients and families receive complete and accurate information and have the opportunity to ask questions. They will encourage clients and families to participate in care and decision-making at the level they choose, and collaborate by involving the client and family in the formulation of a plan of care.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical:
Implements therapy and activities with clients to address goals that have been identified by the Speech-Language Pathologist (as per college guidelines).
Sets up environment/equipment for assessment or treatment session.
Assists with group programs (contact families, book space, prepare and send out information packages, co-lead groups, collect family feedback).
Assist with organizing and delivering generic parent workshops.
Provide coverage for other therapy assistants as requested by management.
Additional responsibilities as requested by management.
Document progress of intervention and maintain communication with supervising clinician as per college guidelines and KidsInclusive documentation policies.
Administrative:
Maintain a record of all daily activities in Alayacare as per KidsInclusive policy.
Ensure maintenance of all client information, in accordance with privacy legislation and KHSC/KI policies.
Participate in team meetings, discipline meetings and KidsInclusive meetings as required.
Provide mentoring/ student placement and shadowing opportunities as requested by management.
Provide input to the development of department and or hospital quality improvement procedures as requested.
Complies with relevant statistical, clinical and administrative reporting requirements.
Complies with KHSC and KidsInclusive policies and procedures.
Carries out duties in a way that embodies the mission and values of KidsInclusive and KHSC and works co-operatively with fellow employees, supervisors and departments toward the achievement of the organization's overall goals and objectives.
Assumes other duties that are assigned in accordance with experience, training and qualifications to which legislated requirements may be applicable.
Educational:
Maintain a standard of professional education by attending educational programs and workshops; transmit information obtained from these workshops to fellow employees.
Complete e-learning modules as required by KHSC/KidsInclusive policies.
Assume educational responsibilities as required by KidsInclusive.
Maintain a record of all educational activities on Alayacare.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
2 years' experience working with children/ youth with speech and language challenges.
Experience working in a Children's Treatment Centre or comparable community based pediatric settings.
Experience working with children/ youth who use Augmentative Communication Systems.
Demonstrated knowledge of speech and language development, including that of children with physical and developmental disabilities.
Demonstrated ability to perform work defined by established procedures or practice and follow instructions accurately.
Creativity in the preparation of materials in planning activities.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills demonstrated by the ability to interact, collaborate, and communicate clearly in an effective manner with children, families, and members of the interdisciplinary team.
Excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task.
Access to a reliable personal vehicle along with a valid driver's license and automobile insurance as per KHSC policy.
Current BCLS at the Health Care Provider level.
Proficiency in speaking and comprehending both English and French preferred.
Continuing education courses related to pediatric practice preferred.
Proven ability to attend work regularly.
Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The applicant must be able to meet the physical demands of this position.
