Therapy Assistant, Physiotherapy \xe2\x80\x93 Orthopedic Clinic
BC Children\xe2\x80\x99s & Women\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital and Health Centre

Reporting to the Professional Practice Leader, Occupational Therapy, and the Professional Practice Leader, Physiotherapy, and under the direction of the Therapists and in accordance with established policies, standards, and procedures, assists Therapists in the provision of patient care by setting up treatment equipment, preparing patients for treatment, assisting patients with assigned rehabilitative activities, adapting patient aides, and cleaning and maintaining equipment and supplies. Performs a variety of clerical duties such as typing, reception, and maintenance of charts and files utilizing computerized software programs.

What you\xe2\x80\x99ll do

  • Receive patients and escort them to the appropriate treatment area; assist Therapists in preparing patients for treatment by performing duties such as patient transfer, dressing and undressing.
  • Assist patients with established rehabilitative activities such as mobility and strengthening exercises, respiratory care, gym and walking programs. Set up treatment equipment and oversee patients in exercise programs. Demonstrate the use of prescribed treatment/adaptive devices such as braces, crutches, wheelchairs and walkers for patients. Communicate to Therapist following treatment regarding patient\xe2\x80\x99s behaviour, progress, concerns and/or changes to condition.
  • Assist Therapists by fabricating a supply of splints for use by the therapists/nurses for adaptation to the specific patient. Assist Therapists with positioning during fabrication of splints that are moulded directly on the patient. Fabricate splint, delivering it to patient and direct patient, family and/or nurse on instruction under direction of Therapist.
  • Assist Therapists in providing care by taking measurements required for fabrication of adaptive devices such as standard Ilizarov post-op knee extension and foot drop splints and fabricating according to samples. Fabricate custom positioning devices such as the fabric Greenville Binder based on measurements provided by the Therapist. Assess post-operative patients for clothing adaptations required for application of external fixators such as Ilizarov or Wagner frames.
What you bring
  • Completion of a Rehabilitation Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC\'s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
