Job Description



POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision and direction of the Supervisor - Therapeutic Recreation and Volunteer Services, works with the multidisciplinary team and utilizes recreation programs to promote independent functioning within the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual leisure domains.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: * Participates in planning, implementing, and evaluating a wide range of recreation programs, including but not limited to one-on-one, small group, large group, and special events.

  • Completes resident's leisure assessments, establishes care plan goals and interventions to achieve individualized goals.
  • Completes all required documentation as per Ministry of Health regulations and RAI MDS including: assessments, care plans, participation records and evaluations.
  • Promotes an interdisciplinary approach to resident care by through ongoing liaison with the multidisciplinary team, families and external partnerships. Prepares for and participates in resident interdisciplinary care conferences.
  • Facilitates relationships between and amongst residents, relatives, staff, and the community in a manner consistent with the Mission, Vision and Values of the home to demonstrate customer service excellence and provides opportunities for customer input into the development and scheduling of recreation and social activities.
  • Supports the Residents' Council by assisting in the running of the Resident Council executive and regular meetings, ensuring; agenda/minutes of all meetings, resolutions are completed as per Ministry of Health & Long Term Care standards, assisting residents to share concerns and suggestions.
  • Supports and effectively utilizes students and volunteer resources in the provision of programs.
  • Participates in mandatory and continuing education, required and relevant to Long Term Care.
  • Participates and assist in regular section meetings, internal committees as required, calendar planning and the sharing of the schedule of events and programing that are offered during days, evenings and weekends with all customers.
  • Ensure that programs include a range of indoor and outdoor recreation, leisure and outings that are of a frequency and type to benefit all residents of the home and reflect their interests.
  • Notifies Supervisor of the need for recreation supplies and equipment appropriate for the programs and ensures that all Therapeutic Recreation equipment is maintained in good working order.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:
  • Degree or diploma in therapeutic recreation, recreation and leisure studies with therapeutic recreation course content, or other related field
  • Experience in therapeutic recreation programming as it relates to the needs for older adults and those with dementia and disabilities
  • Experience in working with volunteers
  • Successful completion of the Safe Food Handler training program as mandated by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
Skills/Abilities:
  • A genuine interest and understanding of the needs of the elderly is necessary
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Must be at a basic skill level in word processing, spreadsheet, and publishing software
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
Assets:
  • Standard First Aid
  • Registered Therapeutic Recreationist in Ontario or a professional membership in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must be willing to work weekends and evenings
  • Must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination at point of conditional offer
  • Prior to commencing employment, will be required to review and attest/affirm to all Pioneer Ridge Staff Immunization Policies
  • Must successfully undergo a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Must have successfully undergone a "two step" tuberculosis skin test within the 12 months prior to employment
  • Prior to commencing employment, must undergo a successful Offence & Professional Misconduct Declaration Process
  • Must successfully complete all mandatory training as required by the Corporation on an annual basis
