Steele's is an asset-based business which utilizes a fleet of dedicated equipment, which includes company-owned assets and owner-operator-owned equipment working as subcontractors along with carrier partners to provide safe, timely and competitive freight services throughout Alberta. Job Title: Terminal Manager
Job Summary
The Terminal Manager for both Calgary & Edmonton terminals is to oversee and manage all local operational functions, including dock operations, local driver performance, fleet maintenance coordination, and terminal safety compliance. While key support functions such as dispatching, customer service, and health & safety are centralized at our Calgary head office, the Edmonton Terminal Manager plays a vital role in executing terminal-level operations and ensuring service excellence in collaboration with the broader operations team.
Job Responsibilities
A. Terminal Operations
Manage all day-to-day terminal activities, ensuring efficient cross-docking, accurate freight handling, and timely equipment turnaround.
Supervise dock workers, ensure proper load planning, and trailer utilization.
Monitor inbound and outbound schedules in alignment with the centralized dispatch team.
B. Driver and Fleet Oversight
Directly manage local company drivers and owner-operators based in Edmonton, including onboarding, scheduling coordination, and performance support.
Partner with centralized dispatch to communicate route assignments, updates, and service feedback.
Monitor fleet condition and coordinate with maintenance vendors for scheduled servicing and urgent repairs.
C. Health, Safety and Compliance
Promote a safe work environment and ensure Edmonton-based employees adhere to company safety protocols.
Serve as the local contact for the centralized Health & Safety Officer, assisting with site inspections, incident investigations, and safety initiatives.
Conduct toolbox talks and safety coaching for dock and driver teams.
D. Customer Experience & Service Quality
Support the centralized Customer Service team with timely local updates on freight status, exceptions, and terminal operations.
Ensure local delivery and pick-up service standards are met or exceeded.
Resolve operational issues that impact customer satisfaction in collaboration with HQ support teams.
E. Facility and Asset Management
Ensure terminal cleanliness, security, and compliance with facility standards.
Monitor inventory of supplies (pallets, straps, fuel, etc.) and place re-stocking orders as required.
F. Performance Monitoring Operations and People
Establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure operational performance, such as:
On-time outbound and inbound trailer readiness
Load and unload accuracy (minimizing exceptions or damages)
Dock Throughput performance
Driver performance metrics (compliance, service, safety)
Incident and injury rate
Fleet availability and uptime.
Dock productivity and efficiency
Provide regular feedback to direct reports and complete performance reviews as directed by our People Resources department.
G. Risk Management
Identifying and mitigating potential risks to operations, such as adverse weather conditions, traffic congestion, equipment breakdowns, and driver shortages.
H. Team Leadership
Lead the Edmonton dock and driving team, creating a positive culture of accountability, performance, and safety.
Foster open communication and teamwork with centralized departments (Dispatch, Customer Service, H&S).
Conduct regular performance check-ins and provide development feedback to direct reports.
I. Continuous Improvement
Implementing process improvements and best practices to enhance operational efficiency, productivity, and customer service quality.
Other duties as required.
Education and Experience Requirements
Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Business Administration, or 5 years of equivalent business experience.
5+ years of experience in LTL or P&D terminal operations, including managing drivers and dock personnel.
Experience and knowledge of the operation of Vehicles (Trucks / Vans), Trailers and attached equipment such as power tailgates, heaters, and reefers.
Strong familiarity with transportation compliance and fleet coordination.
