Initiatives for Just Communities (IJC) is a non-profit, charitable organization that operates four community justice programs: El'dad Ranch, Touchstone, Open Circle, and CoSA. These programs support people with intellectual disabilities, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and those who are currently, or have been previously, incarcerated. The Position
The Transportation Driver will be responsible for driving IJC's bus and other vehicles to transport supported individuals on established routes, as well as other excursions. The Transportation Driver is also responsible for passenger support, inspecting the vehicle and cleaning the vehicle.
What you will do
Transport participants between IJC's facilities and home or on excursions.
Collaborate with Day Program team on setting up or adjusting routes.
Ensure passenger's safety when boarding the bus, leaving the bus, and crossing the street while the bus is stopped.
Guide passengers' activities during travel to prevent distractions or behaviours that could compromise safety.
May drive vehicles equipped for wheelchair accessibility, and aid passengers in boarding.
Provide passengers with information on schedules and stops.
May load and unload passengers' luggage and belongings.
Carry a transportation cell phone while on shift.
Communicate with care providers via cellphone to update them on changes or updates on schedules and routes, as well as confirming when passengers have been dropped off.
Make in-the-moment decisions about changes to routes based on the needs of the day.
Conduct a pre-trip inspection at least once per day, filling out the required inspection sheet, reporting any concerns to the Garage Manager and Program Manager, as well as adding any necessary liquids such as oil, windshield washer and coolant.
Report delays, mechanical problems and accidents.
Ensure the vehicle is cleaned thoroughly inside and out at least once a week, including taking the vehicle to the car wash and vacuum and wiping the inside. Additionally, complete a general disinfection daily.
Track mileage and participants transported, and bring reports to the Mitchell office.
Support individuals receiving support while on the vehicle, ensuring their health and safety and building a positive relationship with them.
Follow all safety protocols while supporting individuals receiving support, including reading communication logs, completing all required written documentation to the expected standard, and immediately reporting any incidents or safety concerns to participant's supervisor.
Provide safe and culturally relevant supports, ensuring that the supports offered respects and aligns with the values, traditions, and needs of the individual.
Help create, build, and maintain valued social roles for individuals receiving support.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
High School Diploma. Suitable combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
A minimum of three years of safe driving experience.
Ability to operate vehicles safely, while driving defensively within standard safety guidelines, regulations, and requirements of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act.
Ability to make quick decisions and exercise sound judgment in a variety of traffic-related and emergency situations.
Ability to read a map.
Driving experience in adverse weather conditions, especially ice and snow.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to supervise passengers with additional care needs.
Excellent customer service skills with the ability to meet operational expectations while providing effective service.
Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate in a clear and effective manner.
Excellent written communication skills with the ability to draft correspondence in a clear and effective manner.
Experience with conflict management in a work setting.
Ability to assess risk and set safe & appropriate boundaries.
Planning and organizational skills.
Demonstrate cultural competence and understanding of diversity, inclusivity, and equity issues. This includes respecting and valuing different cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and identities to ensure equitable access to services for all clients.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, including adhering to PHIA and FIPPA.
Participation in training opportunities and willingness to learn and adapt to new processes or procedures.
Understanding of the issues and challenges associated with intellectual disabilities and FASD.

Valid Class 5F or higher Manitoba Driver's License with a satisfactory Driver's Abstract
Successful completion of First Aid certification and any other compulsory safety courses.
Satisfactory work references.
