Position Purpose:

The Supervisor, Nutrition Operations, is responsible for nutrition, physiology, feed developments and nutritional programs research. This includes overseeing the implementation of diet changes with focus on species specific nutrition requirements, welfare and clinical nutrition. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.

Core Role Responsibilities:

Manages the development, proposal, initiation and execution of nutrition and physiology research aimed at improving animal welfare and conservation of species in the wild.

Operates the maintenance and development of the computerized nutrition record registration systems, including nutritional information in ZIMS.

Ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and instructions as well as assisting with developing SOP's and branch instructions.

Reports on safety hazards and recommends appropriate action.

Liaises with Wildlife Care branches (Wildlife Care and Welfare Science), and other staff in the Wildlife & Science Division on matters pertaining to animal health and welfare.

Manages food production operations to ensure high quality diets are made to support animal health and welfare.

Oversees the feed quality control program and evaluates species specific diet programs, product and inventory and initiates purchases as required.

Coordinates and executes nutritional rounds.

Assists in training and enrichment programs as they relate to nutrition and animal welfare with Wildlife Care branches.

Oversees the implementation of approved diet changes and the execution of diet preparation.

Assists with grant writing and revenue generation programs.

Implements and runs a comprehensive browse and silage program to decrease reliance on imported produce and achieve ongoing annual cost savings.

Assists in the development, supervision and execution of nutrition related research.

Assists with the preparation of scientific papers and articles for journals and internal and external publications.

Facilitates tours, outreach activities and media events in the area.

Assists with the preparation and administration of the annual nutrition research and Cost Centre budgets.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

Possess a graduate degree in Animal Nutrition and a professional designation, with research experience in a major Zoological facility or an equivalent combination of training and related experience. Must have 3-5 years progressive related experience, including 1 year demonstrated experience providing leadership. Experience in a unionized environment preferred. Must have experience in feed formulation and feed quality control techniques, sanitation, and maintaining feeding programs of an array of taxa. Must be capable of producing comprehensive, accurate reports of a complex nature. Must have a demonstrated ability to lead and supervise. Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems, including Microsoft Office 365. Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills. Must have a working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation. Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays. Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner. Must have basic knowledge of budget preparation and administration. Capable of meeting the physical demands of the position.
