Assist chronically homeless individuals and families to obtaining and maintaining appropriate accommodation and provide ongoing housing-based case management (CTI) through telephone and/or video conferencing.

Homeless Shelter worker works with the Housing Retention Team in York Region to procure housing through virtual landlord engagement during the lockdown in the pandemic, subsequently connecting chronically homeless individuals and families with prescreened housing choices and landlords that enable housing stability. Housing Retention supports include but are not limited to housing searches, virtual viewings during the lockdown in the pandemic, application assistance, housing income supports, warm transfer referrals, landlord tenant act training, eviction prevention supports, rapid rehousing and housing based time limited critical time intervention case management that will contribute to successfully getting housed and/or staying housed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program

  • Complete online training module prior to commencement of position, as well as weekly online training modules
  • Research, compile and maintain housing options, document acceptance criteria and procedures
  • In consultation from a housing retention team member, liaise with, and make regular, ongoing contact with Landlords concerning possible vacancies
  • Provide statistical reports of number of apartment searches, placements,
  • Create Housing Map of Pro Housing First Landlords in York and Durham Region
  • In consultation from a housing retention team member, create Service Agreements with Landlords
  • Participate in the facilitation of housing assessment specific to the client to provide the most appropriate support/housing options
  • Participate with assisting clients with obtaining and maintaining suitable housing & provide advocacy as needed
  • Assist the housing retention team to acquire household furnishings when moving into the community and secure Start-up Funds as available or required
  • Participate in the planning of time limited housing based Critical Time Intervention (CTI) case management
  • Source supports and services that assist clients in meeting their financial obligations in regard to rent, bill payments (budgeting purposes) by supporting client needs such as food security, urgent and/or unbudgeted expenses, etc.
  • Perform any other related duties as requested by Program
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Prepare housing and landlord opportunity tracking sheets and share them with housing retention team via team mentor

  • Ensure that the privacy and confidentiality of participants is maintained within established standards, Policy and Procedure
  • Work as a member of the team to ensure that the program operates efficiently and effectively (and to ensure that other staff\'s responsibilities are covered when they are away)
  • Participate in and represent the organization at external committees & forums
  • Participate in weekly virtual meetings and weekly check-ins with your direct supervising staff
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This is a temporary full time position (9 weeks) based on 30 hours per week

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
  • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment.
  • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
  • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
  • *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Students in University or College program in Social Sciences field preferred
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Previous us experience with people experiencing chronic homelessness an asset
  • Knowledge and understanding of Mental Health/Addictions
  • Knowledge and understanding of and a commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression and equity
  • Good knowledge of community resources
  • Knowledge of the Tenant Protection Act
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
  • Be available for full 9 weeks of program
  • Problem solving skills essential
  • The responsibilities associated with this position demand a high degree of
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (Processing/Desktop, Publishing, Spreadsheet / Graphing, Database computer skills essential)
  • Having capability to access TEAMS , Zoom , and/or the willingness to acquire technology and skill set
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Must have good interpersonal/time management skills
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
