About this Opportunity

Facilities Management is seeking five motivated individuals to fill 3 temporary positions on our Horticulture team and 2 temporary positions on our Landscape and Sport Field Maintenance team. These positions will require related experience, a strong interest in and a good working knowledge of the equipment and best practices associated with the work done by the Landscape and Sport Field Maintenance and Horticulture section of Grounds.

A willingness and ability to work any recognized shift, including weekends, is expected.

From time to time, hours of work may be adjusted to suit operational needs.

Job Summary

Facilities Management\'s customers include Deans, departments, faculty, staff and students. The department\'s branches work together as a team to ensure a high standard of customer service delivery, as well as the effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, development and maintenance of campus buildings.

Reporting to a Grounds Supervisor, the Grounds Worker I performs routine, semi-skilled general landscape and horticulture maintenance work using the small hand tools and motorized equipment associated with the tasks up to and including a ride-on mower, small utility vehicle and light duty truck.

Duties:

  • Cuts and trims grass using mowers up to commercial self-propelled types and performs operational maintenance such as oil filter and blade changes and lubrication on equipment used;
  • Assists others in maintenance and development of cultivated areas by digging, hoeing, weeding, planting, transplanting trees and shrubs, watering, feeding and trimming. May operate a walker-type rotovator iin preparation of areas;
  • Erects and maintains signs, goal posts and other exterior fixtures;
  • Lines playing fields;
  • Positions and operates irrigation systems as directed. Cleans or changes sprinkler heads as required;
  • Drives a small utility vehicle or light duty truck; and
  • Maintains safe working conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as required such as ice and snow removal.
Job Requirements

Skills:
  • Use of tools and small motorized equipment associated with general landscapaing and horticulture;

Specialized Knowledge/Education:
  • Valid British Columbia drivers license;
  • Good physical health, sufficient strength, stamina and coordination to perform a variety of routine heavy manual and machine operation tasks continuously under all weather conditions.
Experience:
  • Minimum of two years of experience in grounds maintenance with some knowledge of gardening and equipment and tools used in grounds maintenance.
