The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province\'s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province\'s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario\'s electricity needs - now and into the future.

The opportunity

Provide technical and operational support for computer facilities and Telemetry systems to maintain efficient and effective system operations. Perform administrative activities to monitor and address system efficiency, recognizing deviations from established standards or hardware/software malfunctions. Test and verify the correct operation of the Telemetry infrastructure systems before returning to service. Perform regularly scheduled troubleshooting and maintenance on assigned systems and components. Administer assigned infrastructure IT environments and services. Correct, revise and maintain drawings representing assigned system infrastructure. Create and maintain records, inventories, and systems and network procedures.

What you\'ll do

  • Provide technical and operational support for computer facilities and Telemetry systems to maintain efficient and effective system operations.
  • Perform administrative activities to monitor and address system efficiency, recognizing deviations from established standards or hardware/software malfunctions. Receive and take corrective action on assigned Trouble/Service Tickets or as assigned by Supervisor. Work with vendors to identify corrective action required and resolve problems. Maintain contacts with end users to keep up to date with apparent or re-occurring problems and service requirements. Implement solutions with technical/vendor support staff as required. Maintain a record of service calls or requests with appropriate action(s). Close and update the Trouble/Service Tickets with the corrective/appropriate action upon completion.
  • Test and verify the correct operation of the Telemetry infrastructure systems before returning to service. Maintain documentation in accordance with unit work procedures. Monitor usage of components/parts and arrange for ordering replenishment.
  • Perform regularly scheduled maintenance on assigned IT infrastructure systems and components. Consult user guides, technical manuals and other documents to research and implement solutions. Work with vendor support staff to schedule maintenance and upgrading activities. Ensure clients are informed of system problems and scheduled downtime.
  • Administer assigned infrastructure IT environments and services. Create and maintain user accounts, establish and maintain permissions, perform backups/restores, etc.
  • Assist in the configuration and installation of assigned infrastructure components, such as computer servers, network devices, etc, consistent with established standards, procedures, and policies.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of assigned infrastructure standards and procedures to maintain efficient, effective and secure system operation. As assigned, assist with the testing and auditing of Disaster Recovery Plans.
  • Participate in the commissioning of infrastructure systems ensuring integrity and reliability of the existing on-line business unit and application software.
  • Correct, revise and maintain drawings representing assigned system infrastructure. Provide changes and revisions for approval to Supervisor. Maintain files and records of up-to-date drawings.
  • Perform other duties as required.
What you need to succeed
  • The below knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a two year course of concentrated study in the appropriate field from an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology, Polytechnical Institute or Community College or an equivalent level of education. Requires knowledge of electrical power system theory and electrical power system equipment.
  • Requires knowledge of SCADA and telemetry equipment.
  • Requires knowledge of computer principles related to systems operation and network systems administration to provide technical support to computer users experiencing difficulties with computer hardware and with computer applications and communications software.
  • Requires knowledge of computer equipment and peripheral components to provide problem-solving services to systems users, maintain, troubleshoot and administer the use of network systems, and monitor the performance of computer systems and networks.
  • Requires knowledge of computer software applications to install software and hardware and configure operating system software for testing, to monitor and address system efficiency, recognize deviations from established standards or hardware/software malfunctions, evaluate and install computer hardware and networking/operating software, and carry out program runs.
  • Requires operating experience in personal computers, networks, workstations, terminals, printers, communication devices, software packages, including operating systems and local and wide area networks to provide technical and operational support and to maintain effective and efficient system operations. Requires experience in troubleshooting component and system problems to be able to isolate the problem and determine the cause.
  • Requires on the job experience to become familiar with the organization, the procedures, policies and guidelines in place, specific systems used, system tools, and end user behaviours and service requirements.
  • Requires experience in providing a service and communicating with clients to be able to collect, organize and maintain a problems and solutions log, to determine and document problems experienced, and to communicate electronically and in person with computer users experiencing difficulties.
  • A period of up to four years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario. When working in the office, you will be located at our Mississauga location.
