Senior

Telecom Engineer

. Reporting to the Telecom Engineering Manager, this position is located in either our Calgary, Edmonton, AB, or Vancouver, BC offices. This role involves the design of various telecommunication systems for transmission and distribution projects as well as other industries from conception to construction. RESPONSIBILITIES
Leading and performing engineering design for Telecom systems for transmission line and substation projects.

Working with communication systems in power utility environment, including Microwave Radio, Fibre Optics (ADSS, OPGW), SONET/SDH/DWDM, TCP/IP/MPLS, Satellite System, WiMax, High Voltage Entrance Protection, Power Line Carrier communication, Teleprotection, and telecom power systems.

Preparing calculations for the -48 VDC telecom power systems and preparing fibre optic cable budgets.

Developing engineering documents, schematics, and design diagrams for Telecom systems as well as project scope, proposals, estimates, and budgets.

Creating bill of materials for all telecom equipment and hardware, ordering materials through procurement, and coordinating construction activities.

Preparing and reviewing engineering documents, specifications, and inspection and testing procedures.

Coordinate with other disciplines such as Transmission, Distribution, Civil, Electrical, P&C and SCADA to fulfill desired substation and system requirements.

Coordinating, staging and planning installation and commissioning with the utility and subcontractors.

Responding to information requests from site and completing project documentation including as-builts, calculations and returning the data to the client.

Traveling to site and liaising with internal groups and external contractors and clients.

Enhance and maintain relationships with internal groups as well as external contractors and clients.

Fulfilling the duties of Professional Record for work within the field of practice.

Ensuring the latest safe practices and methods are integrated into the design.

Working within assigned budgets and schedules.
QUALIFICATIONS
Electrical Engineering Degree from a recognized university along with a Professional Engineering Designation or the ability to register as a Professional with EGBC.

8+ years of Telecom experience in a Transmission and Distribution Utility or EPC/EPCM organization designing substations or related Carrier networks.

North American power utility design experience is considered an asset.

Proven knowledge of SONET/SDH/DWDM, PDH, TDM, Microwave radio, fibre optic, WIMAX, VSAT, Ethernet layer 2 and 3 protocols, TCP/IP/MPLS networks

Knowledge in LAN/WAN systems, Structured Cabling System (SCS/OSP/ISP) for commercial and industrial facilities, DPABX, UHF-DMR, security (video, etc.) and access control system, public address and audio-visual equipment

Candidates who do not meet the full requirements and/or with fewer years of relevant experience may be considered at a Junior/ intermediate Engineer level.
