Job Description


The Department of Biology is within the Faculty of Science and offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. Biology offers the widest range of courses in Atlantic Canada and have a number of biology and marine biology programs. Reporting to the Administrative Officer, the Technician is responsible for technical support and set up and tear down of undergraduate teaching labs, and assisting in the maintenance of other department spaces and facilities.
Key Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory procedures related to the development, improvement of laboratory courses including the set up and tear down student lab experiments.
  • Run an automated machine which pours agar onto petri dishes for bacterial and fungal cultures (up to 700 plates per week).
  • Calculate and weigh different chemicals for each plate type. Label and store each plate type.
  • Set out microscopes, prepared slides, stains and materials for students to make their own sides. Prepare solutions and lab supplies/equipment for experiments.
  • Fix microscopes when issues arise during lab. Clean-up/decontaminations of spills during lab-time. Supply new reagents/cultures when spills/accidents occur.
  • Maintain current protocols and edit/ update lab manuals. Assist in other departmental projects like cleaning out labs and with the disposal of surplus goods, equipment and chemicals.
NoteDue to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.Required Qualifications
  • Biology Lab Technician Diploma, with three to five years\' experience in a lab environment performing related experimental techniques (or equivalent combination of training and education).
  • Ability to work independently with excellent attention to detail, as well as good interpersonal skills and the ability to function as part of a team supporting teaching.
  • Computer skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Assets
  • Experience in sterile techniques and basic microbiology, bio safety training and microscopy.
  • Experience with computerized imaging systems (i.e., digital video microscope).
