SCOPE
Reporting to the Supervisor AV of the Centre for Digital Arts, with functional day-to-day supervision by the Area Head, Curatorial Programs Advisor, the incumbent will provide knowledge, expertise, and experience of curatorial practices in service of the Graduate Curatorial Programs. They will monitor the operations of the Lab space, equipment, health and safety aspects, and technical budget, and coordinate extensively with the Area Head to ensure the technical needs of the area are maintained effectively. They prepare, recommend, implement, and optimize approved Curatorial Lab protocols associated with the Graduate Curatorial programs, and provide technical and administrative support to common teaching and research facilities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Oversee the curatorial lab's daily operations, ensuring functionality and accessibility for students and faculty. Maintain and repair specialized tools, equipment, and digital technologies used in curatorial work.
• Assist in planning, designing, and installing exhibitions, including display fabrication, lighting, and mounting, while providing technical support for digital, audiovisual, or interactive components and ensuring installations adhere to professional presentation and safety standards.
• Train students in using lab equipment, tools, and curatorial technologies. Facilitate hands-on learning experiences in exhibition design, conservation, and digital curation. Offer guidance and troubleshooting for student projects involving complex media or technical issues.
• Establish, maintain and enforce all relevant health & safety standards within the Curatorial Lab. Conduct safety training sessions for students, faculty, and staff on the correct use of tools, equipment, and materials.
• Manage and is accountable for assigned budgets/accounts, cash receipts, sales of materials and petty cash.
• Promote eco-friendly materials, minimize single-use plastics, and repurpose exhibit components to reduce waste, such as recyclable crates and consolidated transport, biodegradable 3D printing, and collaboration with eco-conscious vendors.
• Support research initiatives by exploring and implementing new curatorial methodologies and technologies.
• Design hands-on workshops, experiential learning opportunities that enhance student learning and professional development.
• Support and lead other initiatives in service of the Unit as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Diploma of Collegial Studies (three year technical DEC) and four years of relevant experience.
• Technical expertise in handling, conserving, and installing diverse materials, including digital and multimedia works.
• Excellent knowledge of audio-visual systems used in the presentation of artworks.
• Experience in the lighting of artworks.
• Familiarity with collection management systems, exhibition software, and digital curation tools such as the Adobe CC suite, Qlab, Collection Space, Sketchup, MS Project etc.
• Expertise with Web Checkout or any resource management software an asset.
• Familiarity with digital archiving or interactive exhibition technologies an asset.
• Experience working in academic, museum, gallery, or other exhibition settings.
• Coordination experience: booking coordination, inventory management, communications skills.
• Good knowledge (level 4) of spoken and written English in order to assist/instruct and to write instructions. Basic knowledge (level 3) of spoken French in order to provide basic information to students.
• Flexible schedule with ability to work evenings.
• Working knowledge of laboratory health and safety regulations and WHMIS certified.
• Will require use of respiratory protection and enrollment in the University's Respiratory Protection Program.
• Will require use of hearing protection enrollment in the University's Hearing Conservation Program.
• Have physical ability to frequently lift/carry/move without assistance up to 23 kg (50 lbs.) and occasionally with assistance up to and above 45 kg (100 lbs.).
