Designs, fabricates, repairs, and maintains complex experimental equipment and departmental research facilities, including gas and chemical handling, helium recovery facility, cryogenic liquid storage and transfer, high vacuum systems and numerous other sophisticated research equipment. Advises faculty, students and research staff on the development, construction, and use of experimental equipment. Trains and supervises students in the use of electrical, mechanical and machine shop equipment. Coordinates the technical requirements for research lab renovations.Qualifications

  • Technical Equipment Setup and Maintenance - Expertise in setting up, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex laboratory equipment such as cryogenics, vacuum systems, X-ray diffractometers, AFM, and electron microscopes, using hand tools, specialized service tools, and electronic test equipment to ensure optimal equipment functionality.
  • CAD/CAM and Machine Shop Operations - Proficiency in designing, fabricating, and constructing specialized parts and devices using CAD/CAM software and various machine shop tools (e.g., lathe, CNC milling machine, 3D printers). Strong ability to produce high-quality, precise items based on specific requirements.
  • Safety and Risk Management - Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations related to laboratory equipment and chemical handling. Ability to oversee safety checks and maintain life safety equipment (e.g., toxic gas monitors, pressure relief valves) while ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Laboratory Systems and Facility Management - Ability to manage and operate specialized systems such as helium recovery plants, liquid nitrogen storage, and HVAC systems. Skilled in troubleshooting and resolving lab infrastructure issues, coordinating with Facilities Management for necessary repairs, and ensuring proper operation of support systems.
  • Training and Supervision - Experience in training and supervising users in the safe and effective use of lab equipment, including machine tools, CNC facilities and 3D printing. Strong communication skills to provide technical advice and guidance to students, faculty, and research staff.
