Job Summary:




An Automation Technician in automotive manufacturing plays a crucial role in ensuring that automated systems and machinery operate efficiently, reliably, and safely. Automation Technicians in automotive manufacturing need a combination of technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to safety and quality. They often work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment where adaptability and efficiency are critical.

Installation and Maintenance

. Install, set up, and configure automated systems, including robotic arms, conveyors, and other machinery. Conduct routine maintenance and inspections to ensure optimal performance and identify potential issues before they cause disruptions.

Troubleshooting.

Diagnose and troubleshoot problems with automated equipment, identifying electrical, mechanical, or software-related issues. Collaborate with other maintenance and engineering staff to address and resolve complex technical problems.

Programming:

Write and modify programs for programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and other control systems. Implement changes to automation software to improve efficiency, productivity, and safety.

Upgrades and Modifications

. Participate in the planning and execution of upgrades or modifications to existing automation systems to meet changing production requirements. Ensure that upgrades comply with safety regulations and industry standards.

Documentation.

Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and modifications. Update documentation for automation systems, including schematics, manuals, and standard operating procedures.

Continuous Improvement.

Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains in the automation systems. Collaborate with engineering teams to implement continuous improvement initiatives.

Emergency Response.

Respond promptly to equipment failures or breakdowns to minimize downtime and production losses. Develop contingency plans and procedures for handling automation-related emergencies.

Quality Control.

Ensure that automated systems meet quality standards and specifications. Perform quality checks on automation processes to identify and address deviations.


Job Qualifications:



Education.

A minimum of an associate degree in a relevant field such as electrical engineering technology, mechatronics, automation technology, or a related discipline. Some employers may require a bachelor's degree for more advanced positions.

Technical Skills.

Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical and mechanical schematics. Strong understanding of automation systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and robotic systems. Programming skills for PLCs and other automation controllers (knowledge of languages such as ladder logic, structured text, or function block diagram). Knowledge of electrical systems, including wiring, circuitry, and troubleshooting.

Experience.

Practical experience working with automation systems in an industrial or manufacturing setting, with a focus on automotive manufacturing being a significant advantage. Experience with installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of robotic systems, conveyor systems, and other automated equipment.

Computer Skills.

Competence in using computer software related to automation, such as programming tools for PLCs and HMIs. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software for reviewing and understanding system schematics.

Certifications.

Relevant certifications in automation or industrial technology may be beneficial. Examples include certifications from organizations like the International Society of Automation (ISA) or specific vendor certifications for automation equipment.

Safety Training.

Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures related to automation systems and machinery. Training and certifications in safety standards, such as those outlined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
