Job Description

The Physics department at UWinnipeg seeks a full-time continuing Technician who will be responsible for the on-going operation of teaching laboratories by maintaining and preparing equipment and facilities, designing equipment, and aiding in the development of laboratory courses. The successful candidate will also support research laboratories by developing and implementing policies and procedures, instructing and demonstrating specialized equipment and techniques, and participating in research.
Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for maintaining the wide variety of equipment used for teaching and research, arranging for servicing as required.
  • Operates, repairs, sets up, calibrates, inspects, installs and/or demonstrates highly specialized equipment and techniques.
  • Instructs, demonstrates, advises, and assists students, faculty, and researchers in laboratory techniques and the use of specialized equipment.
  • Responsible for keeping abreast of new technology and developments related to current projects, course offerings, and general expertise, and effectively imparting this knowledge.
  • Actively participates in research projects, interpreting research needs, collecting and analysing data, and acting as a consultant.
  • Designs, creates, and maintains mechanical, electronic, computer, and/or other scientific equipment used in teaching and research.
  • Develops and refines techniques and procedures and recommends application of new equipment and approaches for teaching and research.
  • Administers the laboratory operating and capital budgets for the department under the direction of the Chair, serves on the Laboratory Budget Committee.
  • Assists in the preparation of the department budget.
  • Evaluates new equipment and recommends for purchase based on analyses of costs and effectiveness.
  • Develops and carries out laboratory policies and procedures, safety procedures and regulations, and supervises all staff and students to ensure adherence.
  • Is responsible for implementing WHMIS at the departmental level and coordinating all WHMIS activities.
  • Serves on the Science Lab Safety Subcommittee and the Physics Department's Safety Committee.
  • Responsible for the on-going operation of the teaching and research labs, including maintenance of facilities and equipment, and safety.
Qualifications:
  • BSc in physics, electrical or mechanical engineering, or a related discipline (engineering or physical sciences) plus three years of directly related experience, or a Diploma plus five years of directly related experience.
  • MSc in physics, electrical or mechanical engineering an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, establish schedules, and deadlines for work processes
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills with the ability to deliver instruction in the operation of equipment and methodologies and to prepare policies, procedures, guidelines, and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and the public
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of other employees at the same or lower levels.
  • Must be knowledgeable about all safety procedures, computer software, equipment, and materials used in the department.
  • Must be able to keep accurate and complete records.
  • Good public speaking skills.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must have a valid Manitoba driver's license.
The salary range for this position will be from $51,742.60 to $71,762.60 annually.
