Technical Writer

Fixed-term for 16 weeks

$15.50 per hour, 37.5 hours per week

Position Summary

The Technical Writer\xe2\x80\x99s role is to develop written information about the organization\xe2\x80\x99s computing systems that aid in their development, use, and support. Outputs include will include a range of documents to be read by both technical and non-technical personnel across all departments. This position is a part of the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program, pending funding decisions. Applicants must meet CSJ\'s eligibility criteria set out below.

Duties will include:

Strategy & Planning

  • Liaise with IT department team members to identify information technology system procedures and establish documentation needs for hardware and software.
  • Analyze IT project requirements to determine types of documents needed. Document requirements may span from creation of software specification templates, change management templates, quality assurance templates through consultation with IT staff and management.
  • Collaborate with systems and development staff to collect and interpret technical information.
  • Liaise with appropriate stakeholders (IT and Departments) to plan layout, graphical elements, and formatting of documents. Ensure final documents are usable and of high quality.
Acquisition & Deployment
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new documentation tools and methods in support of documentation improvement efforts.
Operational Management
  • Develop documentation project plans and timelines.
  • Plan, design, research, write, and edit a range of documents, including user guides and manuals, technical specifications, training materials, user policies, and proposals, for both print and online media.
  • Edit written documentation of development and other IT staff to create unified and consistent support documents.
  • Establish, communicate, and maintain documentation standards, and provide training where required.
  • Maintain currency and accuracy of all documentation.
Eligibility:

This position is a part of Canada Summer Jobs, a program of the Government of Canada. To be eligible for this position, the candidate must:
  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
**International students are not eligible participants.

Qualifications:

Formal Education & Certification
  • Experiential background with writing and communication within a technical environment.
Knowledge & Experience
  • Hands-on technical writing and editing experience, with specific experience in documenting information technology software and systems.
  • Knowledge of information gathering, planning, and organizing methods and principles
  • Experience with desktop publishing tools.
  • Strong understanding of document formatting and presentation techniques.
Personal Attributes
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening, and interviewing skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into a wide range of computing issues as required.
  • Ability to absorb and retain information quickly, specifically complex technical information.
  • Ability to analyze target audience and to present ideas in user-friendly language.
  • Good understanding of the organization\xe2\x80\x99s goals and objectives.

Offer of employment conditional to CWF receiving funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program.



Work Conditions
  • Full-time at 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday for a 16-week term. Pending funding decisions.
  • Wage: $15.50 per hour
  • Anticipated start date: Early/Mid May
  • Location: Preference given to candidates located within reasonable distance to Ottawa West (Kanata). Remote working with flexibility for coming on site a few days a month or as needed.
  • Extended periods of sitting.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.
