SCOPE



Reporting to the Department Chair, the incumbent manages supervision of technical staff, management of multiple laboratories, technical and professional support across MIAE, budget management, teaching and research laboratory development and responsibility for safety and compliance in the department laboratories. The role requires a deep understanding of laboratory operations, technical expertise, and strong leadership skills. They are a key resource person to faculty, staff and students.



PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES



Allocate departmental resources (budget, equipment, personnel) for teaching and research activities. Manage select budgets. Maintain inventory of all equipment and software assets. Research and purchase lab supplies and equipment. Manage asset redistribution/recycling. Manage key/access cards for lab spaces. Ensure safety in all laboratories (undergraduate and graduate, Mechanical, Industrial, and Aerospace). Provide safety training and orientation for students and staff. Act as ex-officio safety representative to the department safety committee. Consult on safety procedures. Liaise with Environmental Health and Safety. Manage technical support for all managed laboratories. Assist faculty and graduate students with lab design, experiments, equipment operation and repair, and safety. Manage the operation and maintenance of machinery. Organize and support research machining, including liaising with external facilities. Manage teaching laboratories and support training of lab demonstrators. Work closely with Facilities Management on equipment installation and required services (electrical, pneumatic, plumbing, ventilation). Manage the organization and design of physical undergraduate laboratories. Work with other units/student groups regarding projects, laboratory operations, and safety Member of the Department Space Committee.

QUALIFICATIONS



o Bachelor of Engineering degree in a related discipline and four to seven years of related work experience; previous experience in the physical, mechanical and electrical operation of a research facility is highly desirable with at least two years in a supervisory role. Masters degree an asset.


Prior experience in a university environment an asset. Professional Engineer designation an asset. Advanced understanding of fundamental engineering principles relevant to Mechanical, Industrial, and Aerospace Engineering. Extensive hands-on experience with a diverse range of equipment and software relevant to Mechanical, Industrial, and Aerospace Engineering is required. Proven ability to lead, supervise, and mentor a team of technical staff. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to troubleshoot complex equipment malfunctions and resolve technical challenges. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a diverse environment. Experience with budget development and management. Knowledge of personal computers, hydraulics, micro controllers, analog and digital design, computer interfacing, signal processing, Matlab, machining, electronics, and chemical safety. Clean Room Management Knowledge of facilities design, layout, maintenance and operations are assets. Safety Management and Training (WHMIS I and II, laser safety training, corrosives, hazardous materials, radiation safety training, spill response, first aid and CPR) Prior experience in managing personnel and purchasing. Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English and Basic knowledge (Level 3)of spoken French Good knowledge of emergency response procedures.
