Position Highlights



Reporting to the Manager, Grid Modernization, this role supports the execution of BC Hydro's grid modernization strategy by


leading key strategic initiatives and cross-functional programs. The Technical Strategic Principal acts as a business lead for


foundational efforts that span planning, operations, and technology -- helping translate vision into action -- shaping


enterprise-wide strategies that transform our power systems, integrate emerging technologies, and align with provincial


goals and long-term business objectives.




We are seeking a leader who understands the utility business, can lead through influence, and drive alignment across


diverse teams. Strategic thinking, strong communication, and a collaborative mindset are essential to help deliver BC


Hydro's modernization roadmap.


What you'll do





Key Responsibilities:




Strategic Alignment & Planning


Partner with the Manager, Grid Modernization to lead the strategic planning process, ensuring modernization initiatives
align with corporate priorities and regulatory requirements.


Translate strategy into clear goals, KPIs, and execution plans that drive measurable outcomes across the organization. Support annual and long-term capital planning, including stewardship of the 10-year system modernization plan.
Cross-Functional Leadership


Lead cross-departmental collaboration to advance modernization programs such as Distribution Automation (DA), AMI
2.0, and sensor deployment.


Establish governance frameworks, reporting cadence, and risk management protocols to ensure accountability and
transparency.


Act as a connector across business units, ensuring alignment on future grid architecture, operational requirements, and
customer-focused outcomes.


Innovation & Opportunity Development


Identify and evaluate emerging grid modernization technologies, working with technical experts to assess feasibility and
pilot opportunities.


Champion innovation strategies that anticipate electrification trends and evolving customer needs. Foster a culture of creativity, rapid prototyping, and continuous improvement across teams.
Program Oversight & Communication


Monitor progress of strategic programs, track milestones, and ensure delivery against commitments. Prepare executive briefs, board materials, and internal communications that clearly articulate modernization strategies and
progress.


Provide leadership visibility into risks, opportunities, and achievements.
Team & Talent Development


Build and lead a high-performing team, emphasizing collaboration, accountability, and professional growth. Coach and mentor staff, guiding career development and strengthening organizational capability. Promote knowledge transfer and organizational awareness to embed modernization expertise across the company.

What you bring





Education & Professional Background


Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or related field; Master's degree preferred. 12+ years of progressive experience in utility planning, operations, OT, cybersecurity, or program management.
Strategic & Program Leadership


Proven ability to balance long-term vision with tactical execution, translating strategy into measurable outcomes. Deep expertise in program management frameworks, with a track record of leading complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of managing multi-jurisdictional issues through innovation and
balanced risk decisions.


Grid Modernization Knowledge


Demonstrated working knowledge of modernization technologies (e.g., Distribution Automation, ADMS, OMS, AMI,
DERMS, batteries, renewable integration).


Applied experience in evaluating, integrating, or supporting these systems within utility operations. Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and Clean Energy Act compliance. Awareness of industry trends, regulatory drivers, and evolving standards influencing adoption of modernization
technologies.


Innovation & Adaptability


Advanced understanding of asset performance, health analytics, and distributed resource management. Ability to quickly learn and adapt to emerging platforms and evolving industry standards. Proficiency in conceptual design and strategic application of modernization solutions, without requiring deep specialization
in each.


Capacity to translate technical capabilities into business value for reliability, resilience, and customer engagement.
Collaboration & Communication


Comfort collaborating with subject matter experts while providing strategic direction and technical oversight. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical issues to diverse audiences,
including executives and boards.


Strong relationship management, collaboration, and leadership skills across multiple organizational levels. P.Eng. optional A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain a Driver's License: Class 5 In Good Standing
