Your Challenge

We are looking for a Technical Officer to support our Indoor Air Quality team within the Construction Research Centre. The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

NRC Construction is implementing the \xe2\x80\x9cPlatform to Decarbonize the Construction Sector at Scale\xe2\x80\x9d to accelerate and scale up new technologies to help transition the Canadian construction sector towards decarbonization and contribute to the emerging low-carbon economy. It will also establish new codes, standards, specifications, and guidelines to position the sector to achieve its 2050 greenhouse gas (GHG) carbon reduction targets. These investments will help spur the growth of Canada\'s clean technology sector and help achieve Canada\'s international commitments to reduce GHG emissions.

As the successful candidate, you will play an important role within a diverse team working towards improving ventilation and indoor air quality (IAQ) in built environment. You will also be required to work with minimal supervision within the team and share skill sets and mentor junior Technical Officers in order to achieve common goals.

Responsibilities will include:

Provision of technical support services in the design, planning, conduct and analysis of complex experiments and/or tests, and in the operation of research facilities.

Education

University degree or college diploma in a technical, engineering, or scientific discipline is required.

An equivalent combination of work related experience, training and education may be considered.

Experience
  • Significant experience in specifying, calibrating, and installing sensors for the measurement of temperature, relative humidity, pressure, airflow, CO2and/or particulate matters.
  • Significant experience in developing data acquisition systems, including interfacing with various types of sensors, programming controls and user interface (LabVIEW).
  • Significant experience in the design (using software such as SolidWorks or Pro E or AutoCAD), fabrication, assembly, and troubleshooting of experimental set-ups, including environmental control systems such as an integrated humidity and flow control system.
  • Significant experience in coordinating lab activities, assigning equipment responsibility, scheduling day-to-day activities, and making recommendations for upgrades and lab purchases.
  • Significant experience in writing scripts or macros to carry out batch data processing and interpretation (MATLAB, Excel, Python, or R).
The following asset will be considered:
  • Experience in documenting the work procedure, methodology and information on equipment usage with their specifications and to effectively communicate with colleagues about the fundamentals and problems associated with the work.
  • Experience in setting up lab and field experiments for a client or project manager in a multi-disciplinary research environment, validating procedures, resolving problems, and communicating instructions to support staff.
  • Experience in collecting, recording, and interpreting experimental data to determine data validity and recommend further testing or modification to test procedure.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies
  • Knowledge of applied practices and concepts for measuring indoor environment parameters (temperature, relative humidity, CO2, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particles, etc.) and ventilation parameters (airflow, pressure, air velocity, energy, etc.).
  • Ability to design, assemble, commission, troubleshoot, and repair electronic/mechanical devices for lab and field experiments related to improving the indoor environment and ventilation quality.
  • Knowledge of data acquisition, control, and instrumentation, and ability to program in software such as LabVIEW and Vee.
  • Ability to write scripts or macros to carry out batch data processing and interpretation (MATLAB, Excel, Python, or R).
  • Ability to operate mechanical or electrical tools and equipment for preparation of experimental setup and test rig (drills, power saws, tin snips, wire strippers and cutters, etc.) for ventilation and IAQ.

Compensation

From $73,744 to $94,839 per annum.
