Job Description

We are looking for a Technical Officer in Materials Characterization to support the Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre\xe2\x80\x99s new research facility in Mississauga. You will support the goals of NRC and the Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre through research and the development and application of advanced technologies. You will be working in a team environment with researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities, while sharing our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
You will participate in a wide range of activities relating to the development and characterization of advanced engineered materials for clean energy. Duties will include:

  • Undertaking, independently or under the supervision of other technical officers or researchers, technical work on the physico-chemical characterization and evaluation of materials. Key focus areas include electrochemical catalysts for CO2 conversion and hydrogen production, materials for energy storage, micro- and nanoscale powders and high throughput characterization techniques;
  • Contribution, in collaboration with project leaders, to project planning, developing work plans, writing experimental procedures and laboratory test protocols, recognizing and solving issues related to equipment, experimental and analytical techniques and capture, analyze and report on experimental results;
  • Conducting technical and scientific information reviews in order to identify and apply relevant concepts needed for material characterization and testing;
  • Leading or contributing to the design, installation, modification, set-up, risk assessment and launch of new experimental set-ups or equipment; suggest the purchase of and participate in procurement and installation of new lab equipment, materials and supplies; ensure operational continuity of equipiment by developing operating procedures, executing required maintenance, performing troubleshooting, training users, overseeing scheduling and utilization, and maintaining inventory of consumables;
  • Coordinate efficient operations of a multi-user lab by overseeing general consumables, chemical inventory management, lab cleanliness and hazardous waste disposal in compliance with regulations. Actively engage in the organizational health and safety programs by complying with all NRC occupational health and safety policies and regulations.

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education


College diploma or Bachelors of Science or Engineering in Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or in a relevant field.

Experience


  • Sigificant and recent experience in research laboratories in the evaluation and characterization of engineered materials;
  • Significant experience in the use of specialized materials characterization techniques;
  • Experience in the development and/or installation of experimental set-ups, and the development of material characterization procedures;
  • Experience with the installation, safe operation, calibration, maintenance, and repair of characterization instruments and laboratory apparatus;
  • Experience in designing, conducting and analyzing the results of experiments or projects in a R&D environment.

Assets:
  • Experience in standard synthetic chemistry methods;
  • Experience in high-throughput experimentation and/or laboratory automation (physical integration and workflow development, API development, coding implementation);
  • Experience in automated data handling and organization, ideally using advanced software or produced code.

Assessment Criteria


Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies


  • Knowledge of materials characterization techniques, for instance microscopy (SEM, optical), spectroscopy (FTIR, XRD), mechanical testing, thermal analyses (TGA, DSC), including underlying principles, sample preparation, measurement, and interpretation of results.
  • Ability to set-up, implement, calibrate, maintain, use and train users on experimental and analytical techniques and equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate operations of multi-user laboratories, including maintaining safe work environment, inventory management, and hazardous waste handling in compliance with workplace health and safety legislation and regulations.

Assets:
  • Knowledge of materials synthesis.
  • Ability to automate data analysis or data handling, preferably using advanced software or produced code (e.g., Origin, Python, SQL).
  • Ability to work with equipment API and/or modify equipment.

Relocation


Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC\'s directives.

Compensation


From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.
