Your Challenge

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada\'s largest research and technology organization.

We are looking for a Technical Officer in Materials Characterization and Powder Synthesis to support the Energy, Mining and Environment (EME) Research Centre\'s new research facility in Mississauga. You will support the goals of the NRC and EME Research Centre through research and the development and application of advanced technologies.

You will be working in a team environment with researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities, while sharing our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity. You will participate in a wide range of activities relating to the accelerated development and characterization of advanced engineered powders for battery materials and other clean energy applications.

Duties will include:
  • Undertaking, independently or under the supervision of other technical officers or researchers, technical work on the synthesis, post-treatment, classification, characterization and evaluation of metal, ceramic and composite micro- and nano-powders. Key focus areas will be critical minerals for battery materials, including active material for battery electrodes (anode, cathode) and electrolytes.
  • Contribution, in collaboration with project leaders, to project planning, developing work plans, writing experimental procedures and laboratory test protocols, recognizing and solving issues related to equipment, experimental and analytical techniques and capturing, analyzing and reporting on experimental results.
  • Conducting technical and scientific information reviews in order to identify and apply relevant concepts needed for powder synthesis, treatment, handling, characterization and testing.
  • Leading or contributing to the design, installation, relocating / recommissioning, modification, set-up, risk assessment and launch of new experimental set-ups or equipment; suggesting the purchase of and participating in procurement and installation of new lab equipment, materials and supplies; ensuring operational continuity of equipment by developing operating procedures, executing required maintenance, performing troubleshooting, training users, overseeing scheduling and utilization, and maintaining inventory of consumables.
  • Contributing to the efficient operations of a multi-user lab by overseeing general consumables, chemical inventory management, lab cleanliness and hazardous waste disposal in compliance with regulations. Actively engaging in the organizational health and safety programs by complying with all NRC occupational health and safety policies and regulations.

Education

College diploma or Bachelor of Science or Engineering in materials science, metallurgy, chemistry, mechanical or in a relevant field.

Experience
  • Experience in the synthesis of powder materials of metals, ceramics and/or composites.
  • Recent experience in research laboratories in the evaluation and characterization of engineered materials, preferably powders.
  • Experience with the installation, safe operation, calibration, maintenance, modification and repair of specialized instruments and laboratory apparatus.
  • Experience in designing, conducting and analyzing the results of experiments or projects in a research and development environment.
  • Experience in plasma powder synthesis, densification, purification or surface modification would be considered as an asset.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies
  • Knowledge of powder materials manufacturing, post-treatment, sampling, and characterization.
  • Knowledge of materials and powders characterization techniques including microscopy (i.e., SEM, optical), spectroscopy (i.e., XRD), laser diffraction, adsorption.
  • Ability to operate and train other users in the use of specialized equipment and techniques, including the set-up, calibration, maintenance and repair of equipment or experimental set-ups.
  • Ability to coordinate operations of multi-user laboratories, including maintaining safe work environment, inventory management, and hazardous waste handling in compliance with workplace health and safety legislation and regulations.

Compensation

From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.

Rates are under review.
