Job Description


The incumbent will report to the Manager within the Hydrogen Technologies Branch. The Branch consists of the following general areas/activities:
Hydrogen production, storage, applications and safety:

  • Thermochemical hydrogen production using nuclear or renewable energy sources.
  • Low and High temperature electrolysers for hydrogen production.
  • Electrochemical characterization of processes.
  • Hydrogen and other energy storage methods, distribution and network optimization.
  • Applications of hydrogen in fuel cells, transportation etc.
  • Hydrogen safety in nuclear and non-nuclear applications.
Catalyst technologies:
  • Deployment of CNL\xe2\x80\x99s catalyst technologies for nuclear and non-nuclear applications.
The incumbent will be part of a well-established team of professionals and technologists specializing in the above fields. The team\xe2\x80\x99s objective is to increase CNL\xe2\x80\x99s Value Proposition through delivery on exciting Science and Technology (S&t) projects. The team is actively involved in developing, assessing and facilitating commercialization of innovative leading edge technologies through Business Development at CNL.

The main mandate/function of the incumbent\xe2\x80\x99s position is in carrying out experimental work in some of the general areas of Branch activities. The incumbent will be responsible for delivering on commitments on Federal S&T, as well as Commercial Projects. The incumbent is expected to develop and maintain core competencies for emerging opportunities in the above and related fields.

DUTIES
  • Carry out all responsibilities safely and accurately by strictly following protocols and procedures.
  • Initial responsibilities on the job training will be under the supervision of a senior/experienced staff member.
  • Setting up of experimental and production facilities for R&D and commercial projects.
  • Production of CNL\xe2\x80\x99s proprietary catalysts and materials in small and large scale for various applications.
  • Completing daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly activities related to routine laboratory operations such as equipment calibration, housekeeping and waste disposal coordination.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Handling toxic and hazardous chemicals, flammable and explosive gasses and radioactive materials.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Preference will be given to candidates that have graduated from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a program of Chemical Technology, Chemistry, Physics or Engineering.
  • Or Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience in chemical laboratory practices and safety procedures.
  • Some chemical engineering laboratory operational experience.
  • Working knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and equipment.
  • Basic computer skills with word processing and spreadsheet knowledge.
  • Knowledgeable in Quality Assurance requirements in lab activities.
  • Good technical writing skills.
Ability to:
  • Learn under supervision to design of experiments and develop procedures.
  • Troubleshoot technical/experimental problems in a laboratory environment.
  • Make decisions to ensure safety in the laboratory.
  • Make sound decisions and recommendations based on scientific understanding, simulation and experimental results and observations.
  • Make sound decisions based on current and previous work carried out at CNL and information obtained from literature.
  • Articulate and convince others of his/her decisions and recommendations.
  • Maintain excellent records of work.
  • Communicate clearly with subordinates, colleagues, supervisors and managers.
  • Provide accurate and concise observations and results for technology development and commercial activities.
Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat \xe2\x80\x9cStandard on Security Screening\xe2\x80\x9d and the \xe2\x80\x9cPolicy on Government Security\xe2\x80\x9d.
