We are seeking a Technical Assistant (Mechanical) to work in the Generation Design Department. Under the general direction of a
Professional Engineer, you will conduct engineering analysis and execute designs of complex machinery components and
assemblies, including mechanical stress and geometric analysis, 3D modelling, and drawings for turbines and generator equipment,
cranes and hoists, and auxiliary systems for hydraulic generating stations.
Responsibilities:
Prepare designs and specifications for complex machinery and assemblies.
Prepare and check mechanical 3D solid models and mechanical 2D engineering drawings using Autodesk Inventor and
AutoCAD.
Develop and evaluate design concepts, life cycle costs, reliability, and functionality of design concepts and alternatives.
Prepare engineering calculations and reports recommending the most suitable alternative for complex machinery and
assemblies.
Develop detailed material specifications and quality control programs. Ensure procured material quality meets technical
specifications, quality control, and acceptance measures. Prepare installation and commissioning procedures and operation and maintenance manuals, direct technical staff at the site
during installation and commissioning, and review commissioning results for complex machinery and assemblies. Collaborate with other Manitoba Hydro staff, including those outside of the department, and with equipment suppliers to
support project objectives. Develop as a specialist in the knowledge of terminology, design practices, and standards related to cranes and hoists, piping,
and auxiliary systems for hydraulic generating stations. Participate in multi-disciplinary teams dealing with moderately complex issues on moderate to large projects, advise project
teams and team members in area of knowledge, help develop junior staff, and complete preliminary review of drafting and
design work. Contribute to the development and documentation of departmental design processes, procedures, and standards.
Make occasional field trips to develop design and specifications, oversee installation, and provide advanced construction and
commissioning support and visit manufacturer's shops to inspect and direct the work on complex mechanical components and
equipment during manufacturing.
Qualifications:
A two-year diploma from a college of recognized standing in Mechanical Engineering Technology, plus four years of
demonstrated experience directly related to the design of machinery. "Design of Machinery" means demonstrated ability and knowledge of:
Vector mechanics and stress analysis calculations.

Demonstrated initiative and ability to carry out projects to successful completion on schedule, with minimal supervision.
Capable of directing team members and communicating effectively with others.
Required to travel by all modes of transportation, i.e., air, land, and water.
Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $37.94-$52.52 Hourly,
$72,703.54-$100,638.98 Annually.
