Technical Assistant, Veterinary Microbiology
Primary Purpose: To provide support to diagnostic, teaching and research laboratories in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Department Head, Department of Veterinary Microbiology, and supervised by the Clerical Assistant, Glassware and Media Preparation, this position is expected to complete both glassware preparation and media preparation in the GMP laboratory. This position is expected to solve basic problems within known methods and practices. Work is in a cooperative environment. The work requires moderate to heavy lifting with long periods of standing. Frequent exposure to high noise levels, unpleasant odors, and above average temperatures.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities: Will include decontaminating, washing, preparing and sterilizing laboratory glassware and other laboratory equipment; package and sterilize general laboratory supplies; rotate and restock shelved items. Assist with the instruction and supervision of students; assist with training of personnel; disposing of biological waste; glassware; maintain records of equipment maintenance; assisting with the preparation of biological media for the diagnostic, teaching and research laboratories; daily data entry; assist with annual inventory; other duties as assigned.
Education: Grade 12; some post-secondary in a scientific area of study considered an asset
Licenses: n/a
Experience: Relevant laboratory experience, preferably in a University setting.
Skills: Ability to maintain attention to detail in all tasks; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; physical ability to perform heavy labour; ability to perform tasks under general supervision, and function both independently and as part of a team; ability to assess situations and set priorities to meet actively fluctuating needs; ability to analyze new situations and apply existing standards and procedures appropriately; ability to adapt to the stress of a fast paced environment with frequent deadlines and fluctuating workloads; knowledge of Microsoft Office, spreadsheets and databases.
