DESCRIPTION:




Within Patient Care Services, performs collection of specimens and electrocardiogram (ECG) testing on adult and pediatric ambulatory patients.



The Phlebotomy Technician participates in service and hospital-wide activities and programs that model and promote a safe and healthy patient-centered environment and that contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.



The Phlebotomy Technician demonstrates an awareness of and be responsible for supporting and providing patient- and family-centered care. Employees will demonstrate dignity and respect by being courteous and introducing themselves by name, occupation and role. Wherever possible, employees will ensure patients and families receive complete and accurate information and have the opportunity to ask questions, encourage patients and families to participate in care and decision-making at the level they choose, and collaborate by involving the patient and family in the formulation of the care plan.


PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

:
The Phlebotomy Technician provides services in a manner that is consistent with KHSC Mission, Vision, and Values and reflects the core values of Patient-and Family-Centered Care (dignity and respect, information sharing, participation, and collaboration). Performing venipuncture and other specimen collections as required. Performs Lab order entry and data management. Ensuring specimens submitted for testing meet the established criteria for acceptance. Performing ECGs. Maintaining records of quality control and quality assurance in accordance to established policies. Maintaining equipment in compliance with established procedures. Collating data for workload measurement system and statistical reporting. Observing standard biohazard and other safety precautions. Working discreetly with confidential information.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:


Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician certificate program or equivalent. Minimum 2 years phlebotomy/ECG experience in a clinical or private laboratory setting. (preferred) Recent graduate of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program, demonstrating competency in phlebotomy technique. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology. Demonstrated computer competence and familiarity with Microsoft Office software. Demonstrated good interpersonal, communication, and organization skills. Demonstrated ability to follow instructions accurately, be self-motivated, and establish priorities. Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload. Proficiency in speaking and comprehending both English and French (preferred) Proven ability to attend work on a regular basis. Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



The applicant must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position.
