Job Description

Join the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) Learning and Development team as the Team Lead-Transit Training, a key supervisory role that directly influences the quality and safety of our entire operator workforce.
You'll step into a changing, dynamic role where you'll lead and oversee a large team of permanent and relief LRT, Bus, and DATS instructors, as well as supervise new transit operator trainees. This position is crucial for the oversight of the design, administration, and delivery of technical and non-technical training programs. As the Team Lead, you will lead the day-to-day operations of the Learning and Development Centre, supervising up to 34 permanent and relief instructors, plus auxiliary instructors and overseeing approximately 40 bus and LRT trainees at any given time. Your primary focus will be on supervision, including coaching, mentoring, performance evaluation, and conflict management for instructors, as well as managing the progress, suitability, and attendance of new trainees.
What will you do?

  • Supervise Trainee and Instructor Teams: Lead, mentor, and evaluate a large team of instructors and manage the participation, progress, and suitability for employment of all new transit operator trainees
  • Drive Training Excellence: Research industry best practices, implement continuous improvement initiatives, and foster a culture of creativity and learning within the team
  • Oversee Curriculum and Program Quality: Provide leadership in updating and revamping existing curriculum and ensure all evaluation tools consistently and reliably measure the required competencies for operators
  • Ensure Safety and Compliance: Model Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) leadership, ensure staff and trainees follow OHS and Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) practices, and maintain program certifications in compliance with provincial and federal legislation, including the Traffic Safety Act and the National Safety Code
  • Coordinate Operations and Logistics: Make decisions regarding the day-to-day operations of the team, including work assignments, time approvals, and work practices for instructors, which includes working in and travelling between multiple garages
  • Collaborate for Success: Work with managers, consultants, external partners, and internal teams (like Hiring and Recruitment) to align resources, identify training needs, and support various Branch campaigns and community events
Qualifications
  • Education: A Degree or diploma in Business Administration, Education, Adult Education or a related discipline
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience leading a large team in a fast-paced, complex unionized environment
Assets:
  • Specialization in adult education, assessment, and evaluation
  • A Certificate Program in Supervision/Leadership/Management supplemented by training and extensive related experience in educating adults
  • Coursework in Conflict Management, Communication, and Change Management
  • Experience in a transit environment
  • A Class 2 Operator license
Skills Required for Success:
  • Communication and Change Management: Clearly and effectively communicate for task delegation, reporting, team motivation, and leading staff through the implementation of new techniques/technologies
  • Adult Education Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge of current theories and practices in adult education and learning, skilled in developing curriculum, teaching, coaching, and evaluating trainees
  • Organizational and Collaborative Skills: Strong organizational skills to supervise a complex area and efficiently manage tasks, projects, and teams, including expertise with tools like Google Sheets for coordinating training logistics
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Ability to creatively and critically think to overcome barriers, especially when scheduling training and assessments to operational staff without impacting budget
  • Transit Practices Knowledge: Understanding of safe bus operations, effective transit practices, and industry best practices within a large, unionized municipality

Conditions of Employment:
Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Work Environment:
  • This position will be supervising a team who works in several different garages across the city.
  • Be able to do remote supervision, but will be required to work from multiple areas and travel between garages
  • Will be expected to audit instructors while they are delivering training to trainees out on the road in a bus. This will require weather-appropriate clothing.

Salary Range: $55.281 (Hourly); $108,212.560 (Annually)
