Position Summary

The RPN in the team lead position will serve as a resource for clinical staff and carry a clinical assignment. The team lead will support the following primary responsibilities:

  • Communicate additional staffing needs to scheduler/manager, as needed to support clinics.
  • Perform daily unit safety checks, report hazards and ensure safety system reporting as appropriate
  • Support communication huddles with team
  • Support staff as needed and provide guidance related to hospital policies and procedures and clinic operations
  • Regularly attend the surgical care team meetings
  • Ordering/maintaining stock and supplies
  • Reviewing and approving the physician clinic lists for appropriate booking times and procedure type
  • Communicate with manager regarding clinic operations
  • Communication with physicians regarding clinic and patient bookings as needed
  • Prepare and position patient for diagnostic tests and procedures
  • Record charges for billing
  • Document work processes as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned
In addition, the RPN in the Outpatient department is responsible for providing direct patient care in accordance with the mission, vision and values of the hospital. The RPN will adhere to the hospital policies. Direct care involved, but not limited to: medication administration, triaging of patients in the clinic, wound care, and VAC therapy. The RPN will be required to support a variety of outpatient clinics, including, but not limited to, gynaecology, general surgery, hand clinic, urology, ophthalmology, and fracture clinic.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Current registration with the CNO
  • Completion of a vocational, college or other approved program for registered practical nurses is required
  • Current BCLS
Experience:
  • Outpatient Clinical Experience required (2 years)
  • Leadership experience preferred
  • Minimum three (3) recent years Cast Technician experience required (fracture clinic).
  • Minimum three (3) recent years of clinical hands on knowledge of the Musculoskeletal system, including anatomy and the ability to provide current and evidence-based health teaching
  • IV certified and hold a current BCLS required
  • Surgical experience is an asset
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility with high patient volumes, changing needs, and timed appointments
  • Knowledge in basic splinting, orthopaedic emergencies, immobilization of limbs, traction cast care, cast application and removal & reductions required (fracture/hand clinic).
  • Additional nursing skills required: recent experience with complex wound/care, assessments/applications and maintenance of VAC therapy
  • Working knowledge of aseptic principles, including tray set up and assisting surgeons with minor procedures
