New Westminster Surgical Centre, a division of Clearpoint Health Network, is now hiring a Team Lead, Medical Device Reprocessing Technician.

Position Summary





The Team Lead, Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) Technician, oversees the daily operations of the medical device reprocessing department, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant processing of surgical instruments and medical devices. This role coordinates and supervises staff, manages workflow, and supports the setup of surgical case carts and instruments for a wide variety of procedures. The Team Lead ensures strict adherence to infection prevention, sterilization standards, and organizational policies, while promoting a culture of safety, quality, and professionalism.


Key Responsibilities




Leadership and Supervision




Coordinate daily work activities, assign tasks, and set priorities for the MDR team. Monitor staff performance, provide coaching, evaluate competencies, and identify training needs. Assist with recruitment, orientation, and onboarding of new staff. Manage scheduling, timekeeping, vacation requests, and coverage to ensure adequate staffing. Provide input to management regarding staff selection, performance, and department improvements. Promote a positive team environment and ensure staff comply with departmental policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Operational Responsibilities




Oversee the set-up, maintenance, and management of surgical case carts, medical device sets, and OR instrumentation. Ensure proper decontamination, cleaning, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical devices. Operate sterilization and processing equipment safely and efficiently, performing routine preventative maintenance as required. Monitor inventory levels, report shortages, and coordinate procurement and return of instruments and equipment, including loaner sets. Participate in quality assurance, safety monitoring, and infection prevention activities. Maintain accurate records of productivity, instrument processing, and other departmental documentation. Recommend updates to procedures and protocols to improve efficiency, safety, and compliance. Serve as a role model for professional behavior, quality, and regulatory compliance within the department.

Technical Expertise




Operate all sterilization systems and processing equipment in use at the facility. Apply advanced knowledge of infection control, aseptic technique, and sterilization standards to all reprocessing activities. Anticipate surgical case needs and ensure timely preparation of instruments and equipment.

Skills and Abilities




Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to manage and motivate staff. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and infection prevention. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to work independently under pressure while managing multiple priorities. Flexibility to assist in all areas of the MDR department as needed.

Required Qualifications




Successful completion of a recognized Medical Device Reprocessing/Sterile Supply Processing program. Minimum 2 years of recent, related experience in a medical device reprocessing environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Demonstrated leadership experience preferred.

Physical Requirements




Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling of carts and equipment; loading and unloading instruments. Long periods of standing and repetitive hand, arm, and shoulder motions. Exposure to steam, heat, chemicals, and potential contact with blood or bodily fluids. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks safely and efficiently.
