IVCL-2001-501: A History of the M\xc3\xa9tis
(January 4, 2024 - April 4, 2024; Wednesday, 3:10PM - 6:10PM; In-person)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Metis are a distinct Aboriginal people with a unique history, culture, language and territory whose struggle to assert their collective identity helped define Canada\'s nationhood. This course addresses key concepts and the theoretical underpinnings of the political and cultural history of the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation in Canada. From the history of the M\xc3\xa9tis in Eastern Canada, Quebec and Ontario in the 1600s, to the establishment of a homeland and the emergence of a contemporary national identity, students will learn about key figures and events in M\xc3\xa9tis and Canadian history including Louis Riel, Gabriel Dumont, the Red River Resistance and the Battle of Batoche.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Meet regularly with the faculty and students on grading, course content and other matters as needed; assist in the evaluation of student work, using criteria established by the supervising faculty; work with faculty and other academic staff in support of the University\xe2\x80\x99s educational goals and objectives; participate in the provision of a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and its facilities.
QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate should have a graduate degree, undergraduate degree or be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program; a demonstrated understanding of pedagogy, e.g. course preparation, teaching methods, evaluations standards, etc., English as a Second Language training is considered an asset; strong organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; sound knowledge of, and commitment to, healthy and safe work practices; previous teaching assistance experience at the post-secondary level.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Teaching Assistants are hired annually on a per-course basis with fixed-term annual contracts renewable to a maximum of 3 years.
