The Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School is seeking qualified and caring On-Call Teaching Assistants to join our instructional team. Teaching Assistants are valued members of our school community who support teachers and students in a positive, culturally grounded learning environment.
Under the direction of the classroom teacher and school principal, Teaching Assistants help deliver educational programs, assist with individualized supports, and promote student success in keeping with Tsimshian values and the mandate of the Lax Kw'alaams Band.
Responsibilities:
General
Instructional Support
Work with individual students or small groups under teacher supervision
Assist students in understanding instructions and developing independent learning skills
Support teachers in managing classroom behaviour and maintaining focus
Promote student engagement, social-emotional well-being, and inclusion
Prepare learning materials and help organize classroom environments
Support learning through play and experiential activities
Supervise students during breaks, lunch, and field trips
Assist with testing, data collection, and record-keeping
Planning & Collaboration
Implement planned learning activities or programs as directed by the teacher
Provide feedback on student progress, behaviour, and engagement
Assist in monitoring and documenting learning outcomes
Help prepare classroom resources and arrange materials for lessons
Share relevant student information with staff and caregivers as appropriate
Contribute to individualized education and development plans
Participate in staff meetings, school events, and professional learning opportunities
Note: Perform other related tasks within the scope of the position as requested by the Principal or supervising teacher, consistent with training, experience, and school needs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
Grade 12 Diploma (required).
Post-secondary certificate or diploma in Teaching Assistant, Education Assistant, Early Childhood Education, or related field (preferred)
Experience
Minimum 1-2 years' experience working with children or youth, preferably in a school setting
Experience in a First Nations school or community is an asset
Valid First-Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain)

Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills
Ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate professionalism
Dependable, flexible, and self-motivated
Demonstrated empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities calmly and effectively
Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth
Proficiency with basic computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace)
Ability to work collaboratively in a team serving the students and community of Lax Kw'alaams

Classification/Pay Scale
As per the B.C. General Employees' Union Collective Agreement, Education level and Years of experience
On-Call / Casual basis, hours as needed (typically 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday)
$25.05 - $29 per hour
