Job Summary

The Tax Specialist is responsible for preparing all tax compliance, assisting in audits, and responding to tax correspondence. The Tax Specialist should be a skilled researcher and possess strong communication and computer skills. The ideal candidate should be committed to providing efficient, reliable support to accounting department members, other departments, and external parties. They should be trustworthy, thorough, and courteous with excellent time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing of period tax returns (sales & use, HST/GST, as well as corporate income tax in Canada and the US)
  • Preparing of US payroll taxes on an annual quarterly and monthly basis
  • Performing internal and external reviews
  • Performing transaction tax research and analysis, and monitoring system tax interfaces
  • Coordinating workers compensation including preparing annual returns
  • Ensuring G/L accounts accurately reflect the current asset or liability position for various taxes in various companies
  • Completing all requested Stats Canada reports as required
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with internal finance teams and external consultants
  • Coordinating tax audits with external tax auditors and government representatives
  • Preparing tax reporting packages and resolve various issues
  • Working with external advisors to completing annual tax returns
  • Dealing with Senior Management and Ownership
  • Other duties as assigned
Technical Requirements
  • Minimum post-secondary education in the accounting field (university degree or community college diploma with a concentration in accounting, or equivalent)
  • Previous experience in the accounting/finance field would be an asset
  • Completion of or willingness to pursue a CPA designation
Business Requirements
  • A high degree of accuracy with strong attention to detail is required
  • Ability to work under pressure of time constraints
  • Strong knowledge of MS Excel is required
  • Exposure to JD Edwards One World is a definite asset
Cultural Requirements
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal) with management and peers
  • Solid interpersonal skills with the ability to work both collaboratively and independently
