Job Purpose

The Tailor is responsible for the upkeep of uniform apparel. This includes creating patterns and uniforms for special requirements and projects, performing fittings and alterations for staff, and completing uniform repairs as necessary.


Job Responsibilities


------------------------


Perform uniform fittings for employees. Monitor all garments hanging in repair slots and perform repairs required. Complete minor and major repairs and alterations. This includes hemming, seams, replacement zippers, shortening sleeves etc. Design patterns and create made-to-order garments according to specifications and fit, for special requests (suits, jackets, vests, maternity, costumes, etc.) and other special projects as required. Modify commercial patterns to required specifications and fit and create garments as required. Mark, cut and sew garments as required. Coach and train staff on basic alterations and fittings, provide guidance in completing daily tasks and projects. Retrieve uniforms for employees. Assist in the development and maintenance of sewing alteration procedures. Retrieve uniforms for cleaning from the laundry bin. Separate uniforms for in-house cleaning and dry-cleaning. Scan uniform garments being shipped out for dry-cleaning in inventory system. Place uniforms for dry cleaning in garment bags and send to cleaners. Sort uniforms garments for in-house cleaning based on department procedures and washing instructions (shirts and pants done separately). Wash, dry and iron uniforms. Receive and sort uniforms from dry cleaners, scan back into the inventory system. Return clean uniforms to employee slots in the conveyor. Maintain inventory of supplies for both tailoring and sewing machines. Perform basic maintenance on sewing machines. Follow up on sewing machine repair and replacement. Ensure uniforms are maintained in the proper areas and slots. Maintain cleanliness of the laundry areas. Other related duties as assigned.

Primary Qualifications


--------------------------


Previous training in sewing to perform repairs and alterations of garments. Previous experience as a seamstress/tailor or as a sewing machine operator. Basic computer experience. Demonstrated ability to sew, style, create patterns and fit a variety of men's and women's garments. Extensive knowledge of various fabrics. The core competencies for this position include achieving quality results, adaptability/managing change, communication, customer service, decision making and problem solving, integrity and building trust, teamwork and cooperation and valuing diversity. Leadership competencies include building strategic performance, coaching and developing, influencing and leading. These competencies are deemed important for the success of the position and organization.

Secondary Qualifications


----------------------------


Completed education in clothing and textiles, tailoring or dressmaking is an asset. Bilingual French/English language skills are an asset.

Vacation



Accrue up to 10 paid vacation days per year during the first 2 years of employment. Accrue 15 paid vacation days per year after 3 years of employment. Accrue 20 paid vacation days per year after 5 years of employment. Accrue 25 paid vacation days per year after 9 years of employment.
