Job Summary



A Brief Overview



Reporting to the Technical Operations Manager, the Systems Specialist is responsible primarily for the administration of School computer resources supporting and graduate and undergraduate teaching. The incumbent also supports the administration of computer resources used for research and administration by the School. The incumbent must ensure the availability of all computer resources that are required for the overall operation of the department with a focus on the teaching environment.



This position primarily supports a remotely delivered graduate program in another timezone. Some flexibility with working hours may be required. The program will make heavy use of local LLMs. Existing knowledge of technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Jupyter Hub and Notebooks and an eagerness to experiment and develop novel solutions to emerging technologies will be helpful.


This position administers and supports servers, storage, and technology services. This position recommends solutions and identifies opportunities to improve systems. This position establishes project schedules, identifies challenges, and keeps stakeholders informed of delivery deviations. This position directs, allocates, and supervises the work of other staff.










What you will do


Administers and supports servers, storage, and technology services.



Implements, maintains, and decommissions data centre infrastructure.


Recommends solutions and identifies opportunities to improve systems.


Develops training materials and/or delivers training.


Provides expertise to aid in the planning, design, and development of technical resources.


Tracks user issues, generates reports, develops workflows, and requests and tracks changes to production services.


Designs, codes, tests and debugs programs or application software, and analyzes and revises existing system logic as necessary.


Creates detailed and complex queries and reports to support business requirements and information needs.


Establishes project schedules, identifies challenges, and keeps stakeholders informed of delivery deviations.

Directs, allocates, and supervises the work of other staff. Monitors and adapts the door security system for research and undergraduate laboratories.
Writes technical scripts, builds and maintains end-user input web forms and document workflow procedures.
Other duties as required in support of the department and/or unit.

Required Education

Three-year Community College Diploma or Three-Year Bachelor Degree, or equivalent. In addition, requires trade certification, qualification, or on-going learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields. + in computing preferred.

Required Experience

More than 3 years and up to and including 5 years of experience. + Experience in general IT infrastructure with a focus on installation, configuration, and maintenance of IT systems software and hardware considered an asset.
+ Experience with operating systems technologies considered an asset (e.g., Linux OS, Windows OS, AD Forests, Domains, Trusts, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy and Organizational Units, VMware, VM backups tools, etc.).

+ Experience with programming languages considered an asset (e.g., C, C++, C#, Objective-C, Java, Python, ASP, Perl, .NET, HTML5, CSS, Assembler, FORTRAN, etc.).


Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of work processes.
Seek information and input to fully understand the cause of problems.
Appropriately assesses risks before making a decision.
Contribute to the creation and evaluation of possible solutions.
Take action to remove obstacles and address problems before the impact performance and results. Apply equity, diversity, accessibility, inclusion and Indigenization considerations to decision making and planning.
Promote a work environment that is free from sexual violence, harassment and discrimination, and the ability to show empathy for those who have experienced trauma. Assess the suitability of job candidates and recommend the most appropriate person for hire.
Monitor and assess output and the quality of work from team members and recommend need for formal training or development plans to management and identify possible performance and/or disciplinary issues.
