Job Description


Overview

System Operators monitor, plan and coordinate generation resources on the NWT\'s integrated electrical grids. They operate hydro and diesel power plants remotely and manage water resources at hydro sites to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements. Under the general supervision and direction of the Manager, System Control the incumbent is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Yellowknife / Snare and Taltson power systems, including Northland Utilities Limited (NUL) distribution feeder breakers in Yellowknife. Monitoring and alarm response is also provided for NTPC satellite plants throughout the Northwest Territories.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and reports on the generation and distribution systems, and as required adjusts the operation of both hydro and diesel generation units accordingly. This function is performed both via the use of a S.C.A.D.A system and also by communicating verbally to appropriate personnel. Includes monitoring and responding to plant alarms for all facilities in the Northwest Territories.
  • Operates the system efficiently and according to generation schedules. Reviews and forecasts potential system generating requirements to ensure both adequate on-line capacity and standby reserve.
  • Uses the S.C.A.D.A system to start and stop diesel engines, turbines and to synchronize generators.
  • Reviews and executes switching procedures and issues Work Protection Permits for work being performed on equipment connected to the Yellowknife/Snare and Taltson Hydro grids.
  • Generates corrective work orders as required following system outages or for observed problems with equipment and facilities at Jackfish. Executes preventive work orders when assigned.
  • Maintains a good relationship with public and responds to inquiries in a professional and courteous manner. Describes plant and system operations to visitors.
  • Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED, and five (5) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience working in an industrial electrical / mechanical trade, 4th class power engineering certification, or technologist/technician role required. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Good planning and organization with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, such as Excel and Word.
  • Team player with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must not have hearing or colour vision deficiencies.
  • Must possess a valid NWT Class 5 driver\'s license or equivalent.
  • Must undergo a Successful Criminal Records Check.
Salary for this position ranges from $45.15/hr.-$54.86/hr. plus a location allowance of approximately $4,642 per annum.
