The opportunity

Reporting to the Director, IT Operations, and working closely with IT counterparts, local leadership and staff teams, the Systems Administrator is responsible for:

  • Provisioning, installing/configuring, operating, maintaining, monitoring, and managing systems hardware, software, related infrastructure, and network for both cloud (Azure) and local environments at Heart & Stroke
  • Safeguarding and maintaining the integrity of IT systems including privacy, security, disaster recovery, and risk
  • Implementing IT policies, and procedures, and delivering effective and efficient technology support for staff, volunteers, and constituents
  • Working closely with other IT technicians to support and integrate infrastructure, applications, telecommunication and related systems
  • Assisting project teams with technical issues and helping identify technological innovations that would enhance current and future Heart & Stroke infrastructure and network systems
This remote/work-from-home role can be performed from anywhere in Canada; however, may be required to occasionally travel to the Toronto office to support business needs.

How you will make an impact every day

Network and System Administration
  • Deploy functional networks in both cloud and local environments
  • Configure, manage, patch, monitor and support cloud and local infrastructures, operating systems, applications, and services (i.e., Windows o/s, Microsoft applications, PowerShell, Azure CLI, Azure portal, Azure Resource Manager templates, and Microsoft Azure Active Directory)
  • Manage, monitor, maintain and report on system and network performance and integrity, and make improvements or cost saving recommendations as necessary
  • Support the Senior, Infrastructure & Network Administrator with designing, configuring and maintaining backup and disaster recovery plans
  • Configure and maintain remote access system for remote users (i.e., VPN Access, Remote Desktop, Azure Virtual Desktop)
  • Work with Senior Manager of Cybersecurity to implement, install and monitor all security systems (i.e., Azure security, access controls, MDR, penetration tests, PCI, Defender)
  • Work with Application Developers and other IT technicians to implement and monitor the infrastructure and network to support application performances (ie.: SQL servers, link servers)
  • Configure, manage, and support all operational aspects of telecommunication and audio-video systems (i.e., MS Teams phone, MS Teams meeting rooms and conference, Logitech)
  • Actively participate in policy implementation and enforcement
  • Drive standardization and automation into all aspects of the Heart & Stroke technology network
Tier 2 Support
  • Investigate and troubleshoot network and infrastructure problems and change requests from Tier 1 escalations
  • Anticipate potential problems and take action to solve them before they impact users when possible
  • Work with vendors and other technicians to resolve problems and provide possible workarounds to meet established SLAs
  • Communicate with impacted users (staff, vendors, contractors) when necessary
Documentation
  • Create clear and logical documentation, in lay and technical terms, for network and mobile device configuration, disaster recovery, and client settings
  • Assist with documenting and maintaining network and related architectures and solutions based on requirements from stakeholders and/or required business applications
  • Maintain monitoring and backup system documentation
  • Maintain availability, continuity and workaround documentation per ITIL best practices
  • Follow and maintain change management process and related documentation procedures
  • Provide input, documentation, and reports on information security, disaster recovery/continuity, maintenance, and assets
Projects and other duties
  • Backup for Senior, Infrastructure and Network Administrator
  • Assist project teams with technical issues and help identify technological innovations that would enhance current and future Heart & Stroke infrastructure and network systems
  • Function as liaison with third party technicians and vendors when required
  • Facilitate office changes in relations to IT (ie: office printer installs)
Who we need

Experience
  • 2-3 years work experience with implementing, managing, and monitoring an organization\xe2\x80\x99s Microsoft Azure environment, including virtual networks (Azure Virtual Desktop), storage, compute, identity, security, and governance
  • 2-3 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience with managing Modern Desktops environment, deploying Windows client, managing identity and access, managing compliance policies and configuration profiles, managing and protecting devices, and managing Microsoft licenses and apps
  • Working knowledge of PowerShell, Azure CLI, Azure portal, Azure Resource Manager templates and Microsoft Azure Active Directory
  • Knowledge of managing and configuring Windows Server workloads using on-premises, hybrid, and cloud technologies, including implementing and managing the operational aspects of cloud-native and hybrid data platform solutions built with Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Azure Data Services
  • Knowledge of SQL/database or web-based application (ie: Sitecore) is an asset
Education\xe2\x80\x8b\xe2\x80\x8b
  • Post-secondary diploma or certificate program in IT, network or systems administration required
  • Azure Fundamentals certification required / Azure Administrator Associate recommended
  • ITIL knowledge recommended
  • Teams Administrator Associate and/or Security Administrator Associate Certification would be an asset
  • Continuous training and certification accreditation for purposes of maintaining an acceptable level of information security expertise necessary for configuration management
Skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills highly skilled in Microsoft Teams and Office365
  • Must be technically proficient and maintain proficiency at high level through formal courses and self-driven learning
  • Can evaluate and prioritize activities and focus staff resources aligned with business priorities in a high-volume environment
  • Have a strong commitment to providing excellent and respectful customer service to variety of stakeholders with varying degrees of technical proficiency and diverse backgrounds
  • Possess good written and verbal communications skills and be able to articulate technology to business partners and management
  • Be able to embrace change and support others through times of change
  • Be flexible and service, achievement, and task-oriented
