Job Title: System Administrator Location: [Toronto, ON] Job Type: Full Time Contract Salary: $60 to $75/hr : We are seeking a skilled and experienced System Administrator (min 8+ years of total experience) to join our team. As a System Administrator, you will be responsible for the maintenance, configuration, and reliable operation of our company\'s computer server systems and networks. You will work closely with the IT team to ensure the smooth operation of our infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, and implement necessary upgrades and patches. Requirement :

  • Stay updated: Keep abreast of the latest security vulnerabilities and patches released for Tomcat and Apache. Subscribe to security mailing lists, follow official announcements, and monitor vulnerability databases to stay informed.
  • Vulnerability assessment: Regularly scan your Tomcat and Apache server installations for vulnerabilities using vulnerability scanning tools. Identify any security issues that need to be addressed.
  • Patch management: Plan and schedule patching activities for Tomcat and Apache servers. Prioritize patches based on severity and potential impact. Coordinate with relevant stakeholders to ensure minimal disruption during the patching process.
  • Patch testing: Before applying patches to production environments, perform thorough testing on a non-production or staging environment. Validate that the patches don\'t introduce any new issues or conflicts with existing configurations.
  • Patch application: Apply patches following the vendor\'s instructions and best practices. This typically involves downloading the latest patch version, stopping the server, applying the patch, and verifying successful installation.
  • Configuration management: Review and update server configurations and settings after applying patches to ensure they are aligned with the updated software versions. Make any necessary adjustments to maintain compatibility and security.
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting: Continuously monitor the patched Tomcat and Apache servers for any abnormal behavior, performance issues, or errors. Troubleshoot and address any issues that arise promptly.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation of the patching process, including details of applied patches, dates, and any relevant notes or configurations. This documentation helps in auditing, tracking changes, and assisting in future patching activities.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the IT security team, system administrators, and developers to ensure effective communication and coordination during the patching process. Collaborate with stakeholders to assess the impact of patches on applications and mitigate any risks.
  • Ongoing maintenance: Stay informed about new patches and security updates released for Tomcat and Apache. Regularly apply new patches as they become available to ensure ongoing security and stability.
Responsibilities:
  • Install, configure, and maintain server operating systems, applications, and hardware
  • Monitor system performance and proactively identify and resolve issues
  • Handle patching and vulnerability management.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including backups, updates, and system optimizations
  • Manage and troubleshoot network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls
  • Collaborate with the IT team to develop and implement IT policies and procedures
  • Respond to user inquiries and provide technical support
  • Conduct system audits and implement security measures to protect company data
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry best practices
Qualification:
  • Proven experience as a System Administrator or similar role
  • In-depth knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Experience with Apache and strong understanding of the Apache HTTP Server
  • Experience with installing, configuring, and maintaining Apache servers
  • System Administration: Proficiency in system administration to manage server infrastructure and knowledge of operating systems (e.g., Linux, Windows) and familiarity with server configurations, security settings, and networking concepts.
  • Patch Management: Experience in patch management is highly valuable. Understanding the importance of patching, knowing how to assess vulnerabilities, and effectively applying patches while minimizing disruption to services are essential skills.
  • Security Knowledge: Familiarity with security principles and best practices is crucial for Apache patching. Understanding common vulnerabilities, security protocols (e.g., SSL/TLS), access controls, and secure configurations helps ensure the proper implementation of security measures.
  • Troubleshooting Skills: Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities are important for addressing issues that may arise during patching or system maintenance. Being able to diagnose and resolve problems efficiently helps maintain server availability and stability.
  • Scripting and Automation: Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or PowerShell can be advantageous. Scripting knowledge allows for automation of repetitive tasks, simplifying patching processes and enhancing efficiency.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Effective collaboration and communication skills are important when working with cross-functional teams, such as developers, system administrators, and IT security professionals. The ability to convey technical information clearly and work collaboratively ensures successful patching processes.
  • Continuous Learning: Keeping up-to-date with the latest Apache updates, security vulnerabilities, and best practices is essential for an Apache patching role. Demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and staying informed about emerging technologies and trends is valuable.
  • Certifications: Industry certifications such as the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) can provide credibility and validate expertise in relevant areas.
