Job Description

Position Summary

This PhD intern position will be responsible for developing novel vector/cloning technologies as well as characterizing nucleic acids which are used for synthesizing mRNA lipid-based nanoparticle formulations using NanoAssemblr(TM) platform to support internal research projects and product development.

Areas of Responsibility

Support development and expansion of PNI's proprietary Vector and RNA manufacturing platform for RNA-based vaccines and other applications.

Support the diverse projects involving RNA based nanomedicine development.

Manufacture RNA based drugs using PNI's proprietary cell-free systems.

Lead and support independent projects on developing vector platforms for vaccine and regenerative medicine applications.

Support small independent projects on cell-free nucleic acid synthesis including experimental design and reports

Perform process optimization and validation experiments related to RNA-based drug manufacturing and perform appropriate assays for mRNA characterization.

Support assessment of the functional activity of synthetic RNA based vaccines.

Perform routine validation studies to support product development and biochemical engineering projects.

Assist in the scale-up and process development of RNA synthesis in the cell-free systems.

Prepares Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), reports and technical presentations.

Assists in the day-to-day management of the lab.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

Currently enrolled in the first, second- or third-year PhD program Biotechnology & Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Engineering, Nanotechnology Engineering or Pharmaceutical Sciences

Previous work experience in a related laboratory environment or completion of at least one previous co-op assignment.

Experience in bio-analytical assays, strong analytical and troubleshooting capability.

Experienced in animal cell culture (both cell lines and primary cells).

Knowledge about molecular biology techniques (DNA cloning, nucleic acid electrophoresis, gel extraction, PCR, etc.).

Experience with CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing systems would be an asset.

Experience in enzymatic synthesis processes would be an asset

Experience of techniques such as Nucleic acid and Protein purification, Enzyme kinetics, gel electrophoresis, chromatographic purification techniques are an asset.

Must be a resourceful, proactive, detail oriented individual.

The individual must be a team player who thrives in a dynamic fast-paced environment with multiple tasks and aggressive deadlines.

Excellent communication skills.

Be able to work with minimum supervision.
